I never actually thought so, but so many of them were so Amway in their defence of it I didn't have the heart not to ridicule them. I always thought it was a rather well paid way to make some side money or even main money, and it was nice that Japanese skills paid off. It was the recruiters I could never quite stomach. I met one of those fake priest recruiters way back in my JET days and he definitely gave off a creepy vibe.

I've got a buddy who does it as a side job now. He asked me if I'd be interested a couple of years ago when money was tight but I said no since I enjoy my weekend free time more than extra money. Prorated it's good money though and in busy seasons that side job can pay a lot more than the main one (of course that depends on what you main job is). I've always thought it might be a good retirement job if I stay here. Not only is Japanese ability a plus but so is age unlike the Engrish teaching industry.

The recruiter I knew in Kyoto was a hideous replicant skel; I met others that were only greasy and annoying, to be fair. Good points about the inverse market appeal there. I had never thought of that. I don't think I could ever do that, but the guys I know that do it without jumping on the recruitment wagon are all normal guys that want or need pocket money and don't take it too seriously, or defend themselves when teased. And they speak Japanese well enough to do it, which in Kyoto FG society makes them a rare and refreshing change. As far as unabashed sacrilege goes it's a pretty tame sin in MYHOMO, though I have often mused that it must be breaking a commandment or 2.

I did that a few times, too. That was just good clean silly fun, and an actual Big White Santa put the kids over the moon, so that was neat. I get what you mean about getting in the spirit of it, though, esp. in Okinawa. Something about a big furry suit and palm trees just doesn't quite jibe in my mind.

I absolutely do not care or judge others for it, but impersonating a priest still gives me pause.

The fake priest thing bothered me in principle too when I first heard about it but I think that's because I hadn't stamped out that last bit of guilt a Christian upbringing caused. Now I couldn't care less from a sacrilege standpoint. The only thing that kind of just barely still bothers me about it is most Japanese seem to think those are real priests. I wonder though if that's more purposeful suspension of disbelief than actually buying it.

i highly doubt how many western gaijin fellows can insist with confidence are not perfectly fed by fake-priestness.
most of them are 2nd or 3rd class fellows there in their home countries but they pretend to be 1st class by putting on a robe of fake-priestness.

I believe in a God but pretty much think that organized religion is like organized education/government/crime/etc... It never ends well. And if the big guy upstairs is gungho on the 2nd commandment then there's no need for me to get pissy about it. He'll take care of it on his own.

That's sad because on one side you want to see himself crying to sleep while thinking these bullshit to feel better just for shit and giggles. I don't think I believe in a God, but other than that, yes, nicely put, and agreed, especially about the enforcement of the commandments. It's still a weird idea, but so are lots of others, and it is most certainly harmless. And kind of cute in the way things Japanese do can be completely bonkers and still quite adorable.
