Cooking the books

Postby wuchan » Thu Apr 21, 2016 2:18 am

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/mitsubishi-motors-finds-falsified-fuel-mileage-tests/

It's been all over the local news. However, this isn't the first time Japan.inc. got caught cooking the books or changing data. What is important is this company is the cornerstone of Japan.inc. and represents everything Mr. Abe wants japan to be.

the battle begins....

Or is this a move to an endgame? In your HOMO is this bigger than the previous scandals you alluded to? In MYHOMO the airbag scandal is potentially the most damaging face-wise and even economically, if only because that shit can kill people. Olympus and whomever else was cooking books made them look bad and probably had serious financial world and stock exchange repercussions, but that does seem standard practice amongst the capitalist imperialist running dogs (Enron, Royal Bank of Scotland, etc.). Perhaps we can hope that this is the big stinky turd that will finally upset the broken down poop cart and motivate somebody to actually implement the Abe reforms he seems to be acknowledging were only ever lip service. And once he postpones the GST rise we'll know for sure (even though he should because they'll all turn turtle if he doesn't)

Come on, pay a little more attenshion. Mitsu and Fuso have been involved in recall cover ups nearly non stop since the late 70'.
That's even what forced them into an alliance with Mercobenz chrysler because they were running out of claim compensation monies.

outside japan you may be correct. People getting killed makes great headlines. However, Takada is a small obscure company that most Japanese people never herd of until they got into trouble. Literally, no one here cares. There has been no massive media effort to inform the public of the potential problem sitting in front of their face and there has been no huge public recall effort. "no one here (IN JAPAN) died so it's a foreign problem"

Olympus, well.... fucking gaijin. And that's all the Japanese public needs in order to blame the wrong party. When Olympus was given the largest fine in history for kickbacks a few months ago it was barely covered in Japanese media.

Both my cars were recalled and the airbags changed. I'm not sure why, but every case of someone injured or killed by Takata airbags occurred in the US except one reported case in India.

One would almost suspect manufacturers and dealers here got the memo well before those overseas.

Or the ones sold in Japan were made in Japan? Seems like many J-companies outsource more for non-domestic products. Particularly in the US where there are incentives to use local production. Anyhow, the real issue is the BS coverups and denials by the J-dudes in charge and the ancient We Japanese tradition of avoiding responsibility by looking the other way and playing dumb.

Aikawa was asked if the latest impropriety highlighted how the company had not fundamentally fixed itself after the recall scandal, although it had promised repeatedly to come clean.

"I realize that view exists," he said, his voice shaking slightly. "I see how difficult it can be to have compliance consciousness spread among all our employees."

Takata had (has?) a big plant in Mexico which apparently supplied the bags for US market cars. There was a strong suggestion that procedures and environmental controls, especially high humidity, were not good enough at that plant. However, it has since been argued convincingly that the cheap explosive used is not stable enough, even done properly. And Takata has tried to argue it wasn't the explosive at all but rather a fault in the design of the bat wings that open to allow inflation. In any case, a worldwide recall of all cars fitted with Takata airbags was and is being done by Honda. I think other manufacturers have done and are doing recalls more selectively according to where the bags were made and average local humidity and temperature.

Just quickly: most components in NA sold cars will be produced in a NAFTA member, as Matsuki noted (duty free) as is my Subaru (Ooh Hoo, Soobaroo), I read it was the explosive not anything Mexican per se, and all that diving and dodging made them look like Yellow Devils in an old Sessue Hayakawa movie. The US Congress roasted them like "monkey" meat back on Guadalcanal.

Wuchan,
Yeah, fair enough. Mitsubishi is certainly a pillar of Ye Olden Japanese Economy to be sure. We never had them in Canadia til recently, but they are quite global as well, non? Anyways, I meant more of a domino effect that needs to be started to pick up any momentum, but I fear Grumpy Gramps first reply said it all.

Besides the Pajero, Delica, and Lancer EVO, I wouldn't touch anything Mitsu makes with a 10M pole. As Coligny noted, most of the stuff they build is terrible and plagued with problems.

Hmm, I have two Hondas, but I did not receive a recall.

Should I contact my dealer?

Which are which? I swear I heard they killed the EVO years ago but I think they're still pumping out new ones with that 4B11T in em.

On a side note, I never understood why they sold the Eclipse in the US market and the EVO in Japanese market. I've seen more repatriated Eclipses here than I ever did in the US. (They're also deathtraps...but that's besides the point.

Probably the main reason was that the Eclipse was made in Illinois, and based on various Chrysler platforms. Not that I pay attention, but according to Wikipedia there was a Japanese sales channel until 1999.

The evo is dead... After the 15th 'final edition'...
Pajero and Delica are antiques... Only the outlander gets refreshed and maybe the l200 triton. Not officially available in japan but supported by the network dealerships...

I never really looked into them but you are right, they DSM setup must have been engine/drivetrain from Japan and the body & the rest from the US. I never know they actually sold them here though....but certainly makes sense given the amount I've seen.
