That's where it probably belongs.

But let me just point out this.

What’s Behind the Surge in Israelis Seeking EU Citizenship?

[...]

Over the past 15 years, as the European Union has expanded while terrorism and war have continued to plague the Jewish state, Israelis have been rushing to acquire citizenship from the countries their relatives fled before and after the Holocaust. The Spanish government announced in July that it would grant citizenship to descendants of Jewish families that the nightmarish Inquisition in 1492 forced out, a move that is expected to bring even more applicants for a darkon zar, Hebrew for “foreign passport.”

Between 400,000 and 500,000 Israelis have a European passport, says Yossi Harpaz, a doctoral student at Princeton University, more than double the estimated figure in 2000. Add that to the 500,000 Israelis who already have American, Russian and/or other passports, and that’s about 1 million people, or roughly 1 in 8 Israelis, who have dual citizenship. Roughly 75 percent of the country is Jewish, and of that figure, nearly half trace their lineage to Europe. (The other half, known here as mizrahim, come from the Middle East and North Africa.) So for many Israelis, it seems the real two-state solution means holding a second passport.

This doesn’t, however, mean that a large number of Israeli Jews will return to Europe for good. In fact, roughly the same number of Jews come to Israel each year as leave the country. Israelis acquire foreign passports in record numbers but seem to keep them for time of need; actual migration from Israel has not changed substantially. “I wouldn’t rush to call it the end of Zionism,” says Harpaz, “but it means that there is a different way to be Israeli.” Yet some politicians warn that under the continued threat of terrorism, or the rise of a nuclear Iran, future generations of Israelis will eventually choose to leave. “I think the phenomenon is connected to the lack of security that Israelis often feel about the future of the country,” says Ofer Shelah, a prominent member of the Knesset for the centrist Yesh Atid party. “I thought the state of Israel was created partly in order to release us from the historic fears of the Jewish people, but it seems they are still there.”

More

So, the story appears to be somewhat nuanced about masses of Israeli's leaving the EU...

And some of the cries are completely without foundation - At least if we define antisemitism as racist behavior towards Jewish people. There was someone on The Moral Maze (recommended by the way and the topic often comes up) arguing that campaigning for boycotts of Israeli companies, goods and services is racist towards Jewish people. It isn't any more than it was towards white South Africans.

I'm not sure what antisemitism means but one definition of it seems to be that it is anything that is against the interests, actions and policies of Israel. No right to demand an absence of that exists - or ever will exist for any state. No exceptions.

That racism, and sometimes violent racism, towards Jewish people exists and needs to be strongly opposed along with all other forms of racism is in no dispute. That right certainly exists just as it does for other people.

And they will achieve 20 million this year the way things are going. 52% growth year on year in January 2016 and near enough 2 million visitors. Growth has been around 40% for the last couple of years. The return of endaka could dampen things for a bit but there is masses of potential for further growth.

It's ironic that on a day the Labor party suspends 50 members for antisemitic remarks you come up with the same old propaganda.
You look confused so let me help you with a examples from the last 24 hours to give you a guideline in the dark:
1. When Merkel and German diplomats strongly attack Netanyahu and his policies (meaning criticizing Israel policies and actions) no one says it's antisemitism because it's not.
2. When opportunist Labor members attack Jews for their so called appearance and traits or treat politically the Jews as one entity - that's antisemitism.
Can't be clearer than that.
Boycotting Israel leads to one outcome - intensifying the political power of bigots and radical on both sides of the conflict. It's funny that prominent Hammas members and recently Abbas' first relative chose to be treated in Israeli Hospitals when they can choose any other place around the world.
You can keep using Israeli technology and medical service while calling for boycotting and not buying scented soaps... yeah...whatever...
Regarding the passports, that's a mishmash and misunderstanding. Most of the Israelis asking for a EU passport are doing so since most of the country's economy is based on technological export and it is much easier travelling around the world with an EU than an Israeli one. Another small group of mostly young liberal Israelis are indeed moving out to mainly Germany and Holland since Israel is shifting more and more into a right wing religious society state.

LOL - you have adopted that policy since I asked you to back up your BS like you talking about 'Netanyahu hate speech'. I know I know, you met 2 Muslims years ago and they were nice to you so now you are an expert in Middle-East issues.

Thailand, Japan share mutual affection that is rare in Asia

BANGKOK – Thailand is smitten by Japan: Sushi restaurants fill the malls, Issey Miyake's luxury "Bao Bao" bags are all the rage and Thai tourists are flocking to Japan in record numbers to visit a country many view as a role model.

"I love Japan. They really put their heart into whatever they do," says Aunyawee Sahachalermphat, 26, who has traveled to Japan more than a dozen times since studying there five years ago and owns at least 10 Comme des Garcons shirts, another popular brand that sounds French but is actually Japanese.

Like many Thais, she loves Japanese food and admires the quality of its products and its advanced, orderly economy that retains a respect for tradition. "We look up to them," she says.

Japan, too, has a soft spot for Thailand, although it doesn't loom nearly as large in the public mind. It's seen more as a warm, easygoing tourist spot — a welcome break from Japan's often onerous social codes — and a vital production and export hub for more than 4,500 Japanese companies, including behemoths such as Toyota, Honda and Canon.

All this has resulted in a mutual affection between these two nations that's rare in Asia, where historical, political and territorial tensions often complicate ties.

Typical of many in her generation, Aunyawee traces her positive feelings to watching Japanese cartoons such as "Doraemon" and "Sailor Moon" as a child. As an adult, she instinctively trusts anything "Made in Japan" and admires the courteous, subdued manners of many Japanese — widespread sentiments among Thais.

Economic and bureaucratic changes have helped foster these ties. Three years ago, Japan waived visas for Thais for up to 15 days, prompting tourist numbers to surge to nearly 800,000 last year, up five-fold from 2011.

As Thai incomes have grown and budget carriers such as AirAsia have intensified competition, trips to Japan have become more affordable. Likewise, Japanese tourists can now fly from Tokyo to Bangkok for about the same price as to Okinawa, in southern Japan.

There seems to be a cultural affinity between these two peoples — a gentleness, an aversion to conflict and an emphasis on proper etiquette — that creates a sense of familiarity and safety.

Bangkok malls were literally half J-restaurants (well, many were fake with J-names but the "theme" was Japaneses this or that) and half Thai restaurants with food that was made for tourists. (not even close to the usual mom and pop restaurant food) I'm sure we all know why J-dudes like doing "business" there though...

Japan to clamp down on Airbnb hosts
Legislation would put a 180-day-a-year limit on home-sharing
http://asia.nikkei.com/Politics-Economy ... rbnb-hosts

Some recent news on this I just came across. I don't know the ins and outs of it all but that seems a fair enough compromise that allows for limited private rentals without fully empowering the parasitic freeloader economic model a la Uber et al. I assume some scammers and fly by nighters will get all grumbly about having to get their paperwork straight but that only really affects A'holes and scuzzbags like that British fuck that got arrested last year, so good.

Has anybody used an AirBnB in Japan? I seem to remember GG's place looking really quite nice and priced accordingly but whenever I look at the site it seems like I would be paying hotel rates +10% for the rarified privilege of staying in somebody's grotty 6 mat sized apartment and subsidising their mortgage. What is the attraction of this model? Is it the I Like Bernie Sanders couchsurfing dumbster ideology bit?

From the article:
Japan's tourism and labor ministries plan to cap the number of nights homeowners can rent out spare rooms or whole residences at 180 per year.

[,,,]

Japan has a chronic shortage of hotel rooms -- a situation that is unlikely to improve with the surging numbers of tourists visiting the country.

Yeah, I smirked a bit at that too. I think it might have been you that mentioned before how twisted the logic seems but there is an element of consumer protection and industry regulation that isn't being addressed by the freeloader scumbag options like AirBnB & Uber, so it's nice to see they are taking a reasonably rounded view of the issue. I am somewhat surprised they were that generous, and even that they didn't simply squash the whole AirBnB platform outright. As much as I would love to see that happen there are people that use it responsibly and profitably (our own GG) and I am sure you would too, but this idea that regulation and licencing is the problem is the root of the problem in MYHOMO. Just because some clever techy scumbag invented a way to evade industrial regulations and infastructural investment doesn't mean it's a good thing. It's why taxis and hotels are licenced and regulated, allowing for the problem of protectionism and a lack of competition.
I wonder how a hedge bet investment against Uber and AirBnB would work? That would be very satisfying if it worked.

Japan has a chronic shortage of hotel rooms -- a situation that is unlikely to improve with the surging numbers of tourists visiting the country.

Japanese problem solving logic?

Stopping hotels going out of business perhaps

I accept there is that, and probably a healthy amount of backroom crony lobbying and bumwashing, but at 90% occupancy even the industry lobby must recognise there is room for the Minpaku niche. The problem with the freeloader model is that rather than accept regulation and licencing as a cost of business they use transparently sophistic BS to argue they aren't part of the same industry and their competitors and the regulators are tired of it. If you profit by providing accommodation or hired car rides you are part of that industry. That's what an industry is.

Judging by the difficulty in booking a hotel in this country, they are in no way struggling at the moment. It is as Kuro speaks I think. The leech like upstarts don't contribute anything and impose costs which the rest of us have to mop up. For example, I am told that their tenants never sort their rubbish. The non resident owner's agents then come along, sling it all into the burnable pile and piss off. Hotel guests do exactly the same thing of course but the hotel staff sort it and dispose of it through commercial collection. AirBnB rubbish has to be hand sorted by the local government at significant cost and disruption.

So, 180 days a year and that's your lot eh? A smart enough move methinks - enough so part timers can still operate in periods of peak demand but not nearly enough for full on commercial exploitation.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Well put. I think 180 days is a nice compromise, as you noted. Extra income for those interested, extra available accommodaton for those needing it, and enough of a cap it should help control the fly by night leech crowd. Plus it's a nice raised finger to the New Economy mavens that seem to think their business costs are other people's concerns and an unnecessary drag on their profits. Whom I detest, in case I wasn't clear :biggrin2:
Plus, I still don't get the point of paying a premium for a glorified homestay. This stay Toyoko Inn prices have always been at par or cheaper than the AirBnBs I looked at, and it's a hotel.

I think, it is similar to Uber. Totally understand, if the authorities don't want Mr. McGoo on dope in an uninsured car with no brakes take fares away from responsible taxi drivers. OTOH you can also overregulate things (Kim Jong-un likes that, though).

If an AirB&B has all their fire safety and insurance in place, pays their taxes and follows usual protocol in respect of natural disaster information etc. (and sorts the gomi, **sigh**), then there's no need for a 24/7 reception desk of a specified minimum size (Brussels likes to regulate the shape and size of bananas, though).

And if the hotels cannot meet the demand anyway, then this means that there is space enough for everyone, no-one gets hurt. So why not?

Regulation is fine, as long as it protects the unsuspecting customer, but competition can and should by all means be hard and fierce, or else prices go up, while quality goes down.

Well, I am unsure why you are so prejudiced against clearly delineated front desks of very specific dimensions ( ;) ), I agree with the rest of it. It would be nice if this is a step to allowing greater part time participation, and what would be really, really cool would be them really getting down and creative on the self-regulatory mechanisms and procedures........like using that new style fax type thing......WTF it's called. The one the freeloader firms use to bypass the regulatory regime...............
I'm not holding my breath though.
So, GrGr, are you reconsidering the short term rental idea with this new step, or does it still look too fraught with bureaucratic and regulatory roadblocks.
I am considering building a dorm on my bean sprout ranch to accommodate agricultural tourists, as long as I only have to put up with them half the year.

Has anybody used an AirBnB in Japan?

Yes.

And had a couple of friends who previously lived in Japan who did as well.

The only sticking point I could see was that with almost all AirBnb condos, unless the host owns the entire building, regardless of whatever the Tokyo Prefectural or National laws might be ... they're often in violation of the rules governing the condominium regardless of whether the host owns that unit or not.

Unless all the guests are somewhat savvy about living in Japan, or the condominium is massively huge and anonymized, anyone with a steady flow of newbie tourists as guests are going to get red-flagged by their building management.

if I were in the high end home burglary business, I'd use Airbnb to familiarize myself with the buildings I would want to hit. One week would give enough time to map out the absentee tenants, the very high net worth ones, the security systems, cameras, schedules of tenants and staff etc... and then hit it a week or two later using another Airbnb unit with a different ID.

Probably it's already happened.

One of the best jobs I heard of was the conniving but entrepreneurial Filipina maid who had several single foreign clients all working in the financial sector. One day, they were shooting the shit over beers when one indicated he was down as his place had been expertly burgled and the police hadn't a clue how it happened. No signs of forced entry etc. Another indicated the same happened to him last month...and yet another threee weeks ago. In all there were about 5 ... it took awhile to figure they had all been using the same maid whom by that time was long gone.

I like the way you think but I think you should get an honest job ;)
Good point about condo rules: another reason why AirBnB can be a parasitic nusiance. Who buys a nice apartment so they can live near a revolving door of sketchy looking Iberian and Yugoslavian tourists (nice people but they look like thugs or horror movie characters)? I suppose the thing to do is buy an entire small apartment building with only a few units and really doll up the interiors, though at AirBnB rates I could see reviews downgrading it for having a typical Japanese grubby exterior.

Just curious, but what was your and their impressions of the service and digs, and how did you find the prices?
I still prefer Toyoko Inns but I could see AirBnB working for 2 or 3 people.
