What about Osaka?

Postby groovewonder » Fri Jan 02, 2004 4:51 pm

Where are most of you f*cked gaijin located? I'm currently on vacation in Osaka, and aside from the new year's countdown party, I've probably only seen about ten gaijin in Osaka. I don't get out much though. Any f*cked gaijin out here in Osaka, or are most of you closer to Tokyo?

I'm just happy to be away from Okinawa. For most people, Okinawa is a vacation spot. For me, it's busy, busy, busy... I'm actually enjoying my peace and quiet.

When I'm in Japan (which is a couple of weeks every few months) I am in Takatsuki. Sort of as close as you can be to Kyoto without leaving Osaka.

I can count the number of gaijin living there on one hand: 1.) pale American-looking guy obviously broken by his salaryman job. 2.) cute blonde babe who looks like she may work at the local strip club. 3.) very hot MILF with two happa white/Japanese kids. 4.)Me, the guy with the best tan and goatee in town who frequently visits his local 7-11 for quickie meals, Calpis drinks, and perusing the nudie magazines.

All of them look a bit depressed, so whenever I pass them I try to give a slight smile or nod to acknowledge them. :(

Sure "All of them look a bit depressed"! Gou ni itte wa, gou ni shitagae. (Entering the village, obey the village <or> When in Rome...) Smiling is my favorite way to torture salarymen. :P

Heh, I spend most of my time in Honolulu, Hawaii, so relatively speaking they look a little depressed to me. The Nihon-jin tourists and students seem MUCH happier here comparatively for some reason  (Too bad I can't say the same for the j-girls here who married ex-GIs  )

We'll see how my own outlook holds up when I make the semi-permanent move to Kobe possibly later this year.

GridReaper- can you expand upon your comment about the j-birds who've married GIs? I can sort of guess why they might not be the happiest ladies in the land but if you can share some details with us, that'd be cool.

I can imagine many downsides to marrying someone in the armed forces including the extended time away from home, the depression that can accompany some of that line of work, etc. but are there common misperceptions that j-girls often make about GIs in particular?

Yeah, I know. Not even my wife's family--the main reason we're in Osaka.

Well, all I can say is that if you don't have a marketable education or skillset after you leave the military, you better work on one or pray you win the lottery soon. Other than that, you better have family here, because you're going to need their support.

It's been my experience (which might be victim to selective observation) that many of the ex-GI's find out that it is hard to find a job after leaving the armed forces and have an even harder time finding a job that pays better than minimum wage. Those particular ex-GI's in Hawaii often end up as rent-a-cops or something equally unfulfilling. Unfortunately, they bring Japanese wives with them.

Let me give one example of a Japanese woman here. She meets a GI in Waikiki and they have fun partying together. He flies over to Osaka to meet the family and are soon married. The GI decides to retire in Hawaii because he had fun boozing it up when he was stationed here. The couple soon discover how expensive living in Hawaii is, especially when the only job he can get is a minimum-wage graveyard shift guarding a mall. The ex-GI figures as long as he is in America, he doesn't need to learn Japanese (or even try to stop his beer belly from expanding). since he works a nightjob, he can't watch over the wife, so she is not allowed to leave the house at night. In fact, she isn't really allowed to do much without his supervision and approval. The wife feels trapped in their crummy apartment, but she is too ashamed to call her family in Japan to help her out (even to help her out of this marriage). Her friends and family don't hear from her in a while (because she is not allowed to call overseas because he doesn't want to pay for the long distance call, but he can call his family on the mainland because "his cell calls to the mainland aren't considered long distance"), so they come to visit to make sure she is alright. She goes out for one night with her friends and the husband does his best to avoid them because he can't understand Japanese.

That one is one of the better ones. I don't want to get into ones with the meathead ex-GI's who can only get their point across with their fists. Or the others who continue to be the premier pimps and players of Waikiki and prey on every Asian girl they see and leave the wife at home occupied with the babies.

Grrr..... I really hate the ex-GI's and Univ. of Hawaii athletic dropouts who decide to stick it out in Hawaii because they are addicted to their "superstar gaijin" status in Waikiki.....

Enough of that crisis in Hawaii, it's pissing me off too much writing about it.

I'm heading to Okinawa next month for a friend's wedding. How's the weather there at the end of February?
