If you don't like soki soba, rafute, goya, and awamori, there's something wrong with you.

As an occasional exotic treat or even nostalgia trip, sure. As another round of That's All There Is So Like It......not so much. Okinawan Cuisine makes Japanese cuisine look bountiful in it variety, and that's not easy. Except for Goya and Awamori: they're garbage all the time. The problem with Okinawan food isn't that any of it is particularly bad, though some ingredients are pretty pukey, it's that there's only 5 items and way too often they overdo it in their peasant zeal to doll stuff up, like with rafute. Properly cooked meat doesn't need either soy or sugar, and if the skin is still on it you grill it you don't stew it. That's just gross. It sort of reminds me of French food, grossly overrated and sadly overdone, with way too much stuff that should be grilled or fried being boiled or stewed.

But a second for Tulip over SPAM. When the boat is cancelled and there's nothing else but rice and cabbage that stuff can get quite tasty, and a crispy fried Tulip and cheese sangy is a nice lunch.

Goya is a bit of an acquired taste. Some of his paintings are not exactly easy on the mind...

Well that's the only time I would have any of those things in Tokyo. I have never been nor do I have any desire to go to Okinawa.

Sure, in which case, cool. But it gets very tired rather quickly when that's all there is. Any particular reason not to go to Okinawa? Other LT FG friends express interest but also want a break from Japan so they go abroad for sun and fun. Mind you, they all speak Japanese like you & I speak Urdu. I like it because it's sunny, has great beaches and water, they speak a language I do and I don't have to deal with white heathens and grasping 3rd Worlders. And from the sounds of it it's cheaper than current Thai beach prices, and about the same as Vietnam looked last time I checked. There's not many $10 clean bunk beds left in beach country anywhere that I know of. Not that I stay in those anymore, but I still stay clean and comfy for under $40 a night.

Years ago in LA I decided it was better to wear those UV blocking shirts that surfers wear rather than blind everyone with my whiteness while I turned red. I sure as hell didn't get the injun brownie genes when it comes to melanin like my brother did and I'm not too crazy about skin cancer.

True. The sunburn is actually worse, coz ya float and get patchwork burns that look silly. Plus, if that's not your thing, it's not your thing.

I lived in LA for two years when I was a little kid . That was in the early 80's before everyone worried about skin cancer and using sunscreen. I got one of those super nasty pussy blister causing sunburns. It was fucking awful and probably. I once made the mistake of using Japanese sun screen a few years ago. That shit doesn't work for pasty crackers like me. My legs turned purple.

To keep from getting burned at the beach without covering up I need to apply super high SPF sunscreen twice an hour. The problem with that is I also have extremely sensitive skin and have to pretty much use unscented everything or I break out in a rash. Applying sunscreen repeatedly all day doesn't help that.

I use sunscreen as little as possible. Given that it might be noxious it does so little it's not worth the bother. I just wear long sleeves and or pants, a home centre straw hat and stay out of the sun between 11 am and 2 pm ish. I have had a few failures but it seems to work well enough. Anybody that burns more easily than I do simply needs to find a different hobby, especially at 24 degrees North latitude. It's like an open air broiler after mid-May. Most long term FGs I know in Okinawa are serious sun bunnies, but they also seem built for it, which I am not. I can see them turning into shoe leather in 5-10 years, though, like a bunch of tennis club wives. Yerk

That would be the other good reason to wear a shirt rather than try covering up with sunscreen though you still need something on your exposed head/hands/legs. I usually use the spray spf70 stuff from the US...it's literally for babies and smells like baby powder but it doesn't ever irritate my skin and is waterproof.

When I was young and fed up with office work, I worked as an electrician on construction sites for a while. A great way to dissipate all that surplus energy that you have, when you're young and strong.

That's what we used for sunscreen; milking grease (boob lube)

Worked very well and cheap, but this was before the ozone hole. Not sure, whether it is still of any use for that

That name turns on my geile hausfrau

Isn't sunscreen potentially not all that good for you? That's half the reason I just cover up; the other half is I would rather just sweat into a nice linen shirt than be slathered in chemical goop that makes me feel hotter than without it, regardless of how well it works. It's like wearing a jersey knit t-shirt or gonch in humid weather: sticky, yucky, icky. I just buy 2 or 3 Uniqlo linen LS shirts and a pair of linen chinos when they go on sale (XXLs usually get left over). And as they wear out they turn into beeyotchin' PJpajamajamas. That stuff Wagyl linked to does look like it might be safe and effective, mind. Assuming the Cancer Council is there to fight it not promote it

My biggest problem is the food here. I don't eat pork or rice which like 80% of the okinawan diet, and not too keen on shell fish or goya either... Not being jewish my diet is pretty kosher. I'm English and French by decent so the sun doesn't agree with me either. It's like locals get down right offended when you say you don't eat pork.

He says as his sort of Jewish grandmother shouts Oy Vey! from wherever she be ;)

But yes to that. Not eating rice would put me in terminal mindfuck, but both rice and pork canot help to make for maximisation of personal happiness quotient. JAFO, do you just not care for them, or does it go deeper? I know a few FGs that don't/won't/can't eat rice. The number that are ex-US military surprised me at first. Then they told me where and how they grew up. And these guys all like Japan and have a good groove. Weird, man.

She was German first and Jewish second. She made the best pork tenderloin in sour cream sauce ever.

For JAFO maybe it's a low carb thing with the rice since he's into being shredded and maybe he's one of those those guys who's into working out and mistakenly thinks pork is bad but eats other kinds of animals. Or maybe he just doesn't like them.

Personally, pork is my favorite, and I also very much like the Okinawan style.

But having to eat it every day would be a bit too much, methinks.

Great point BTW. The French do wine, bread, and cheese very well but goddam they can ruin a piece of beef by smothering it in an unnecessary sauce. A good steak only needs salt. Black pepper and a pat of butter are also acceptable.

I am still boycotting France (Since 1996!!!!!!!) so I can't speak to the wine, and I only remember one harder cheese I liked, but that bread is too good to deny. As you said, I meant their Cuisine food. I find it cloying.

Funny about pork. Probably a cultural thing too, but northern Euros eat it like Anglo Health geeks eat free range hand fed chicken white meat and they look a lot better than most North Americans, but there still seems to be a trend to regard it as unhealthy. Most of what I hear mentions the kosher/halal ban, so it might be a touch of the rise of this newfangled secular religiosity with all these squirrelly kids blabbing on about Ancient Wisdom and other atavistic BS. The Jews banned pork becase it's a cosmological anomaly, period (as a non-ruminant cloven hoofed beasty)

As Kurogane was astute enough to consider, the rice thing is actually a thing my body doesn't care for. My mother can't eat rice at all. I can get down about 1 onagiri after that I start to break out slightly. The more I consume after that the worse it gets.

The pork thing however was because I saw a pig farm when I was young and it scarred me for life. I did eat bacon and sausage for a good number of years after but once I got into boxing my trainer told me that pigs are bad for a fighter because they don't sweat and can't get rid of a lot of the toxic shit they eat so their bodies encapsulate it in lipid tissue. Since I already had an aversion to pork anyways I just gave it up entirely. I never went back to it.

If I would have went to a beef cattle farm at the same age instead of the pig farm and saw the same types of things I probably would never eat beef again either. Goes back to the old adage " may like hamburgers but it doesn't mean you want to see where it comes from " ignorance is bliss.
