Maybe he tried to walk home, following the bread crumbs he dropped while being brought there...

It seems the boy walked out on his own and showed up at an SDF training camp. He was not "rescued" (and authorities said they were planning on scaling back the search at the end of today).

Abandoned boy, 7, missing in Hokkaido mountains for six days turns up at SDF training site
Japan Times | June 3, 2016
A boy found Friday morning inside a Self-Defense Forces training facility in Shikabe, Hokkaido, may be the 7-year-old missing since his parents abandoned him last Saturday in the mountains...
...
The boy apparently identified himself as the missing child, Yamato Tanooka, 7, of Hokuto, Hokkaido, and the police are trying to confirm this...
...
SDF troops joined in the search Wednesday, but could not find any sign of the boy.

According to broadcaster TV Asahi the boy was found in a building used as a training area for the military.
The site is roughly 7km from where he went missing,

Coming straight for me about 5m away, dropped the trash and tried to get some spray poison. About the thickness of my thumb, black and red coloring and about 30cm long. Here's the list of things I tried:

1) Cockroach Spray - straight walked through a cloud and pool of this liquid
2) Bug Powder - nothing. Should have killed any exoskeleton insect but nope.
3) Bleach - this really pissed it off
4) WD40 and 556 CRC - curled up then uncurled and started to come at me again
5) Engine Starter Fluid - nothing.
6) Brake Cleaner Spray - stopped it. Then it unfroze/woke up and was not a happy camper.

Finally grabbed a lighter and napalmed him with a full can of brake cleaner. Kept moving whilst on fire, leaving a nice trail of burning whatever. Took a good 30 seconds of roasting to get it to curl up and stop moving. Almost all the neighbors coming outside to see what the hell I was starting fires up and down the block for.

Them some tough fuckers. Like o-suzumebachi.

Next time just step on it or if you're too much of a pussy to do that, smash it with something long like a shovel or broom handle.

Speaking as a father I would say any parent who claims they have never got so mad at their kids they've done something dumb they regret later is a liar.

The father has suffered hugely these past few days, and I would guess part of the reason he did what he did is he is the type who doesn't smack his kids. Smacking kids is considered counter productive, but alternative forms of discipline can be very wearing on the patience. He fucked up badly, he has to live with it.

One of the best things someone has ever said to me was by a fellow dad, "At least our generation reflects on how we mishandled a situation and tries to do better next time, our parents came from a background where the adult was always right, even when they weren't.

So I would say some counselling is in order, but taking the kid away would be self righteous posturing.

Now I have to get my two to go to bed, already half an hour after bed time.

Ha ha ha that was funny

Wife and me have been telling the kids to go to bed for half an hour, get up stairs to find the wife forgot to make the beds after airing the mattresses today. Daughter wants her own room, told her if she wants her own room she has to learn to make her own bed. Son decides to worm his way across the landing under his fouton looking like a front toothless maggot. Such is parenthood.

If you think that our parents' generation didn't grapple with self-doubt, even if only internally, then you maybe you were scarred enough by the process to never have a deep, close discussion with them. Every generation at the very least tries not to make the mistakes of the one before it. It doesn't always succeed.

I'm not sure that you or I would agree with the last line, but the rest rings true.

Bear Grylss would be closer to the mark. The funny thing is that when I mention Bear Grylss to Japanese people, they assume it is the name of species of bear that should have eaten the kid.

Utterly brilliant poem. I pinned a copy to my daughter's cot as a reminder.

Not the happiest soul was Larkin

Worked in a northern university library, never a good sign.......................

kids decided it would be fun to sleep on the floor rather than in their beds tonight, maybe in appreciation of Yamato-kun, put them back in their beds, put their beds back in their places, son pretended to be asleep, daughter had a tizzy because she wanted to sleep on the cold hard floor not her nice comfy bed, such is parenthood

Yes, verty true, and most anything's better than Rambo anyway. OTOH I am not sure, if I would want to watch Japanese copy cat episodes of "Man vs. Wild" with the boy as host. Survival in Ueno Park with blue tarp and dinner from 7/11 :)

OTOH, there was that shitstorm, when the fans found out that Bear Grylls took the liberty of overnighting in a hotel instead of a wilderness shelter while filming some of his episodes, so if all things are equal, most things might as well be equal.

The guys, who live under a bridge near here where I use to walk my doggies, even have a pretty decent tv. So survival doesn't always mean that you have to drink your own piss, I guess.

I'm not saying he should be taken away from the family and that's not what CPS does in every case anyway. I'm just curious how those things work here.

I think they would also look at the probability of this happening again, which is probably zero, and the fact that the boy was fine. As others have said, stupidity is not the same thing as maliciousness or cruelty. And depsite Russell's (and my) votes for the kid, the little prick was throwing rocks at cars, which has seriously fucking dangerous potential written all over it.

I can remember the wife screaming at the kids that they'd be left by the roadside if they didn't behave - this while driving on some motorway or other. I remember at the time telling her not to do it because it is debilitating and totally counter productive to issue warnings that you have no intention of carrying out.

So, joyous as we are at the resurgence of a new Spirit of Yamato, let the post mortem begin.

Did they fuck up the search? The search dog thing could be down to the parents fucking up where they dropped him, but if he was in the training ground bunkhouse for more than 1 or 2 days, wouldn't that mean they didn't check rather obvious potential destinations? Just speculation, of course, because Yamato Damashi lives on!

It rained, so no surprise that the dogs couldn't get a trail.

These training ground huts indeed look like obvious places to check out.

BTW, I saw a map that seem to imply that the boy must have crossed several roads before he could get to these huts. Am I mistaken?

Aha, blame it on the rain then. From a Google Earth snapshot somebody linked on the latest RocketNews article he seems to have walked 5-ish Kms NE to the training grounds. On that map it does look like there's a road he crossed, but I think that is the electronic map boundary that comes up when you search a specific locale. And a angry, hurt possibly crying 7 year old might easily cross a road and keep trudging aimlessly. When I ran away from home I walked 8 whole city blocks.

Not sure if this will work, but............
https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Nanae, ... 2803?hl=en

So, he started inside the jagged pinky area at the NE corner area, and walked NE to the training grounds, according to this
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =3&theater

That looks wild enough, and there are no paved roads I can see.

Mmmmmm, velly intalesting, Colonel Hogan. Too busy assuming the worst to do the basics (a la "Is your PC plugged in, sir?")? Their search protocols aren't looking too hot if that's the case. I call for Much Hansei!!!!!!!!!! He must have been one hungry little rock thrower when they found him, eh?

PS Copyright claims on the film title Yamato Damashi Lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
