It might just be me, but I always find gender "assigned" stuff unnecessary..

"OOOOHHHH NOOO I can't ride that bike as it is a womans bike and people might question my sexuality.."

I thought it equally silly that people place meaning on which ear they have pierced.

I ride a jet black mamacheri just like all the HS guys... why do I ride such a weak bike? I mean, back in Canada I had a sweet Gary Fisher MTB. Well... times have changed. Back in Canada my MTB was for mountains. It never touched pavement. Now I live in Osaka (Yup, the Big Slope) and there are no mountains. Only buildings. And stairs. I guess the stairs could be fun to take. But when crossing a stream... nah, I don't want to ride through the Dotonburi. So I got a black girly shopping bike. And you know what? Nobody looks twice at it. Nobody steals it, kicks it, scratches it up... abuses it in any way. It cost 6000Yen new. I've had other bikes before and something always happened to them. This one's got staying power (except for the rust which always shows up around the 2nd week of ownership).
Don't you dare call me a pussy for riding it.
BTW I got steps on the back, too.

I know, that's outrageous. It's blatantly obvious that no matter WHICH ear has the earring, the person is gay.

<ducks>

I am KIDDING. Seriously, with my IQ of 67, I can't remember which ear is supposed to mean which for more than five minutes anyway. I stopped thinking about earring meanings a long time ago.

Now on the bike question... something has always seemed counterintuitive to me here. Doesn't that horizontal bar on men's bicycles pose a serious mortal risk that is specific to men?

"Specific to men"? Nah. Men just are more vocal about such accidents.
The horizontal bar is there for greatest structural strength with the least weight. Girls bikes were thought to be suitable for the lesser demands of the "weaker" sex. Sheesh.

No those bikes don't blow. And it's not like comparing a Pinto or a Gremlin to a McLaren F1.
It's comparing a lame bike made in China to an high cost bike made in China. And neither is gonna pick up the chicks.
But a Pinto will beat the pantys off any girl compared to a mamacheri.
And a McLaren F1 will beat them all.
And I think we've seen time and again here that it's not about the ride as it is stock... but what you do to it. Big Stereos, fish tanks, lights...

Yeah, me too. Twice. Both times drunk and wanted to pass on the cab fare. I tried to leave them somewhere where they might get returned  . Quite a few more times I've looked for one but couldn't find any unlocked. I've also had three bikes stolen from me and smashed a friend's expensive mountain bike in drunken rage over a girl.

Yep, also did the drunken-search-for-a-bike and had bikes stolen from me. Thing is, I can't be too angry, since out of the three or so bikes stolen from me, only one of them was a bike I hadn't purchased with the five-finger discount.

Does the "men on girls' bikes" thing carry over into motorized territory as well? You know, guys who ride scooters or mopeds in Japan that'd never ride them back home since they're not "manly?"

I've heard from more than a few scooter-riding guys in Korea that they'd only ride a "real" motorcycle in their home country and wouldn't be caught dead on a scooter, because "everybody knows those are for girls."

(Admittedly, I feel kind of the same way about my motorcycle. It's a friggin' 125 and the smallest thing I ever owned in the US was a 650. But at least it looks like a real bike.)
