Lordy, lordy, how does one get fired from a care facility in Japan? Most are begging for workers. The only things I can think of are that he was seriously abusing patients, or that he had a visit from the mental illness fairy.

His motivations must involve some form of emospasma, so I imagine you are at least partly right on both counts, but I would also counsel that it's still too soon to guess, so I won't even take a stab at it.

One man with a knife killing 19 people and injuring 45 more is no mean feat. I'm assuming he snuck into the facility in the middle of the night and methodically work his way through a bunch of sleeping disabled people given the call to the cops was at 2:30 am.

Too much unpaid zangyo for when Naoki and Taro decide to have a feces fight? The demands of the people I know who are in this line of work are enough to warrant a visit from the mental illness fairy.

Totally agree with you. Given the poor pay and shitty working conditions they really have to reach to the bottom of the barrel to staff these facilities.

What prefecture is he from? It is now compromised by terrorism. Build a wall around it and enforce the strictest vetting on anyone who wants to leave!
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

What color was the knifeman?
If he was yellow, we need to put these yellows under better police surveillance and control.

You misunderstand completely.

You in fact build the wall around yourself. There, you can be imprisoned by your fears. You are already, so no extra harm done.

The most important things are to fail to address the root causes of the problem, and to react only after the event. This prevents lazy copycats, and encourages innovation and imagination, as well as perpetuating unreasonable prejudice which leads in a vicious circle to radicalisation of those subjected to unreasonable prejudice. Innovation and imagination will flow for years to come!

More cutting-edge rapier wit from Kurogane, I see.

I suppose the ultimately this incident was due to the pressures caused by slashed budgets.

While there is no doubt that budget cuts played a part, I would also think that the increasing severance of work conditions and wages also contributed. It seems to me that the normal lived Japanese economy is becoming increasingly cut off from the actual fundamentals of it. How can you have effective negative unemployment and no wage increases? It must be like a knife to the heart of people with aspirations and ambition.

SJ,
Ouch. A Midnight Rambler job, eh??? That is some very warped shiite, and it certainy explains the death toll. I wondered about that too, even in a disabled facility. Whatever revenge he dreamed he deserved he must have seen seriously loopy to go to those lengths.

I get that you're just joking, but it does seem a touch early for such cutting remarks. Maybe take a stab at it on a different thread? :)

Fair enough, I felt like those last few were pretty dull, so I'll cut it off here.

PS  Kudos to Coligny for starting a timely and convenient way to organise this topic
 :jawdrop: :cry2:

Perhaps we could also start a Used Rock thread to aid those of us in need of something to crawl under

its famous that there are a lot of the facilities and hospitals for disabled and crazy ppl in and around hachioji city. if you walk up the alleys along the mountains there, you will encounter one of them.
and its odd and slightly disgusting that recently fucking snobbish igirisu medias got to often pick up japan-related things

Because it ruins the "kaigai kowai, Nihon wa safety cuntryssne!" the locals enjoy parroting to each other? Isn't there some Nippon would be Olympian boycotting the Rio Olympics because it's too abunai for them?

Something stinks. The complex had CCTV covering entrances and stairs to 2nd floors. Presumably it also CCTV inside the buildings. So, why wasn't he spotted and police called?

Same as when my MIL died. She was in a clinic, hooked up to lots of wonderful beeping high-tech thingamajigs and then in the nurse room, there were monitors for all of it, but I have never seen anybody actually sitting there and monitoring the monitors.

I know a few people who work in care facilities and I can confirm what Coligny is saying. There are few people working during the graveyard shift and they're not usually glued to the CCTV. They might be eating their "lunch," helping someone to the toilet, or watching movies on their iPad. Plus most are temps with low pay and even lower skills who probably aren't about to play hero.

Someone fucked up

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/ ... sagamihara

Authorities said Uematsu had been “involuntarily committed” to hospital on 19 February, after police in the town of Tsukui contacted him in response to a letter he had attempted to pass to the speaker of the lower house of Japan’s parliament.

In the letter, Uematsu argued that the government should permit euthanasia for disabled people, said he would be willing to carry out such killings himself, and detailed how he would do it.

“I envision a world where a person with multiple disabilities can be euthanised, with an agreement from the guardians, when it is difficult for the person to carry out household and social activities,” the letter said.

Uematsu’s letter said he could “wipe out a total of 470 disabled individuals” by targeting two facilities for disabled people during the night shift, “when staffing is low”.

“The act will be carried out speedily, and definitely without harming the staff. After wiping out the 260 people in two facilities, I will turn myself in.”

He was released from hospital on 2 March

I did research (the legitimate kind) on nurses and I nursing and care work are similar. Care workers are underpaid and overworked, so I can very much see this guy simply breaking down and doing this as a result.

I think, the guy has a point. If I had a choice between spending years tucked away somewhere in a corner of a "care" facility or being euthanised, I'd go for the latter in a heartbeat. If I was a patient there, I might as well have thanked him for the mercy...
