WTF, YAMJH? LOL...TGIT!!

Postby Taro Toporific » Wed Aug 10, 2016 2:36 pm

Yikes! TGIT*! Thursday, August the 11th, is YAMJH—Yet Another Mysterious Japanese Holiday— Mountain Day/山の日
*Thank God It's Thursday
A third of Japan unaware of Mountain Day as holiday makes its debut
japantimes.co.jp | 2016/08/10
Nearly a third of people have never heard of Mountain Day, according to a new survey, as the newest official public holiday is set to be celebrated for the first time on Thursday...
...
With the addition of Mountain Day, [slacker] Japan's 16 official holidays will be the most among the Group of Eight major powers, and double the number observed in Britain...

Oh, I hear you. I refuse to drive on 3~4 day Japanese holidays unless I leave well after midnight and return in wee hours of the morning the one day after the end of the official holiday.

A lot of people who don't work as traditional salarymen or women don't pay attention to most of the holidays since it doesn't affect their work schedule.

Of course...some people end up working overtime because what they do has an increased workload....but it's pretty hard not to pay attention to either missing or masses of people.

I still can't figure out if this holiday was designed to add a day to the Obon holidays or take one away.

People realize on the day but they don't necessarily notice in advance. A lot of my friends do blue collar jobs and pay no attention to most national holidays. Add to that the fact a lot of people were already getting Obon Yasumi and they probably just forgot about Yama-no-hi. It's not like there was a huge campaign to remind people.

First, Japanese pole vaulter Hiroki Ogita’s leg touched the bar; then what’s in between his legs touched it, too, knocking it loose from the 5.3 meter height...more...
