I don't think you can judge that from the information you have and from what I have heard yes, he was certainly a very determined coach but actually she wanted that and did have a genuine passion for the sport. In any case he died two years ago FTR. What's a bit iffy is the fact that the Japanese public seemed to just expect that she would get gold yet again. This is her fourth Olympics. After 12 years at the very top of a sport like that it's not at all unreasonable that someone younger and better comes along.

Like I said above, if it's not the case, awesome....but the latest TV rendition of the story has her as a child, sobbing and declaring her hate for her father for he would give her nothing but harsh words and his stick...saying only her mother's embrace could bring her comfort. It indeed paints a picture of child abuse and psychological scarring with daddy trying to relive his passion through her at any expense. Accurate or not, it's a pretty bizarre story to blast on TV as a peek into an Olympic athlete's family life. Of course there's that new young table tennis champion that has a similar overbearing parent (mother in that instance) pushing a child beyond reason and preventing them from having a normal childhood for their own passion....but because the athlete is now older and grateful, it's all ok?

Fair enough. I haven't seen the program. I wonder if it's been quietly suppressed around here due to local sensitivities?

Not so sure about that, she's in it with her mom so I doubt they'd block it? Editing can make it look worse/better than it was so even then it may not have their seal of approval but with them in it, I I took it for face value. I also found her comments after the loss very odd. Something to the effect of it being her first olympics without her father and she thought he would send help her from somewhere...but she was mistaken.

Anyhow, this is getting to deep, let's wade back to the shallow end and look at the bright side, Helen Maroulis isn't too hard on the eyes...even when she's had it hard in the eyes.

1. I wouldn't put it past television to create a dramatic story -- naturally, the vision is reenactments. It makes good TV! Just like the genital polevault obstruction which turned out not to be so. And the Team GB member held at gunpoint which you referenced which turned out to involve no weapons.

2. I also wouldn't put it past Matsuki to pay as much attention to what is on the screen as he apparently pays to the text content on this forum. It is either that, or repeated unclear communication from him as to what he actually is trying to express in his posts, which leads to his repeated attempts to clarify after the event.

3. While some networks do not have affiliates in all areas, I don't think they go to the effort of creating a program just for one region to avoid \broadcasting a segment being broadcast to the other regions. Not unless they are also faking the moon landings.

Matsuki, so you are basically saying "I'd hit it!"?

Not that it matters and I agree with everything you say but did I? Reference a Team GB member being held at gunpoint I mean.

Not to worry. I wasn't at all sure of the fidelity of my own memory. And I'm still struggling with the vampire bat reference.

I was there. It wasn't deep, but it was pretty fucking funny, esp. given Matsuki's often distant relationship with the English language as both he and I speak it.

What I find very disrespectful about the crying over the silver medal is that there were a lot of other athletes who trained as hard as they could and put in the effort but won nothing. So crying over a silver medal is a real slap in the face to those other competitors.

Sportsmanship seems to be on the decline in general. It is all about winning, and winning only. Sportsmanship supposedly celebrates the competition. Winning or losing is just a score. I've noticed that the athletes rarely compliment others anymore, for example. At one time if you lost you acknowledged the winner's success with a "jolly good show, old chap/chapess" or the equivalent. I know that's what the handshake is for, but just look at how they're doing it this year. Just a quick cursory touch in passing while avoiding the other person's eyes. No words are exchanged. It's a rule so just get it over with as quickly as possible. That and all the tantrums (not to mention the ridiculous howling announcers) has really dampened my enjoyment of the games this time around. At one time I was enthused about the Tokyo Olympics, but unless things change drastically over the next four years I doubt they'll even be worth watching. The self-congratulation is likely to rise to an all-time high, and that will be pretty hard to stomach.

The Olympics is a wonderful opportunity for a little international goodwill. Unfortunately, as another poster mentioned earlier, we might be at the end of that road.

For everyone asking, Japan stepping on the line in the straightaway is not a disqualification unless they impede a competitor.

This Canadian race walker is a true Okympian. He could have appealed and possibly won, but he himself stated he wouldn't have felt good about it, and he is happy with a personal best and fourth place. I wish there were more athletes like him around.

Well ... that Brazil vs. Germany soccer match was an emotional thing. Too bad it had to end as a shootout, but wow ...

In case you missed it:

* Gold: Brazil (for the first time)
* Silver: Germany
* Bronze: Nigeria (these are the guys who didn't have the plane fare to Brazil, but nevertheless promptly thrashed Japan in their first match after just getting off a plane provided by a sympathetic airline)

Anyway, so the Brazilians were booing the German team during the shootout. Bad form. But after Neymar snuck the winning goal past the German goalie, who totally failed to read just about all of the Brazilian kicks, and the Brazilians were all crying and hugging each other, the German coach began applauding the Brazilian win, and most of his team soon followed suit. That's how it's supposed to be, and it was a beautiful thing to see. At least some of 'em still understand the Olympic Spirit. I hope the others take note. Very nice.

BTW, fantastic work by the GB team this time around. We might be locking down the bronzes, but they are taking a dillydong for the rounders over sevens. Is this national resurgence a result of the renewed confidence all Britons share now that they have cast off the heavy yoke of despotic European oppression? Either way, they will Leave Rio with quite a gold mine. Well done, UK.

I expect he will. He was already raking in a fair old whack in the US doing just that before this Olympics advertising Gatorade or something like that. He'll be in even higher demand now.
