Agreed. And after a major earthquake, nobody would be focused on the pilings.

Even if they managed to figure it out.....(sucks teeth) regrettable, unforeseeable, shoganai, etc etc.

Judging by how TEPCO and the companies that cased all the mercury poisoning in the past have fared, not much to fear.

Tokyo cops rap weekly magazines over publication of ‘obscene’ erotic prints

Tokyo Metropolitan Police have warned the editorial departments of four weekly magazines over the publication of erotic images dating back centuries, it was learned on Monday, reports public broadcaster NHK (Oct. 19).

According to police, the publication of shunga, or erotic woodblock prints, inside magazines Shukan Post, Shukan Taishu, Shukan Gendai and Shukan Asahi Geino along with nude photographs of contemporary women on separate pages could be viewed as “obscene” under the law.

The production of shunga works reached its peak during the Edo Period (1603-1867). While similar in artistic style to ukiyo-e works, which often show courtesans and natural scenes, shunga pieces are highly explicit, typically featuring couples engaged in various sexual positions.

Earlier this month, Shukan Bunshun suspended its editor over the publication of three shunga works. One piece published by the magazine was Katsushika Hokusai’s “The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife,” which depicts a woman being sexually pleasured by an octopus.

[...]

The pieces published by Shukan Bunshun were as a part of an introduction to a shunga exhibit now underway at the Eisei Bunko Museum in Bunkyo Ward. The exhibit prohibits visitors under 18 years of age from entering.

“We will continue to respond to the publication of content that emphasizes obscenity rather than art when needed,” a representative of the police is quoted by NHK.

The editorial departments of Shukan Gendai and Shukan Asahi Geino refused to comment on the matter. A representative of Shukan Taishu said that the matter would receive “future consideration.”

An editor with Shukan Post contested the claims of the police. “Shunga is traditional culture in Japan that should be displayed to the rest of the world with pride,” the representative said, “and, until the end, we will view it as art.”

Abe's Options for Halting Japan's Looming Demographic Crisis

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has ordered his new minister for demographic issues to come up with “bold proposals” for raising Japan’s birthrate. His aim: Stem a slide in the labor force to drive production and fund the retirement of the country’s elderly.

The working-age population in Asia’s second-biggest economy could shrink as much as 40 percent in the next 45 years, while the number of elderly balloons in a country with one of the world’s longest life expectancies. Abe last month made arresting the decline a priority, announcing a new economic plan that calls for stabilizing the population at 100 million in half a century from 127 million now.

Here are some measures Abe’s new minister Katsunobu Kato, a father-of-four, could introduce to slow the downward spiral.

Immigration

Less than 2 percent of the population are non-Japanese, compared with about 13 percent in the U.S. and Germany. Economists have called for increased immigration, and about half the respondents to an April poll in the Asahi newspaper agreed.

Abe last month rejected the idea of accepting more foreigners, saying he would first seek bolster the fertility rate, and entice women and the elderly into the workforce. Last year, he said foreigners were needed as housekeepers to allow more Japanese women to work outside the home, but details of a pilot program are yet to be decided.

Meanwhile there is no shortage of political capital and debt funded cash to squander on seeking to rewrite history, squabbling over what does or doesn't get into a UN library, chasing whales around the southern ocean and all the rest.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Japan's first lawmaker to take paternity leave faces backlash

Meet Kensuke Miyazaki, the man about to become Japan's first lawmaker to go on paternity leave.

Miyazaki has announced that he will take time off when his wife, fellow member of parliament Megumi Kaneko, is due to give birth to their first child next month.

"I decided to take paternity leave because I thought men taking part in child-rearing is indispensable in solving the declining birth rate and promoting the role of women in Japan's future," Miyazaki said.

He's facing a backlash from traditionalists, but labor rights advocates say he has a point.

Survey finds male students in Osaka Pref. suffer more dating violence than females
Image

Male junior high and high school students in Osaka Prefecture are more likely to suffer from dating violence than their female counterparts, a survey suggests.

A survey on dating abuse conducted by Osaka Prefecture high school students on about 1,000 junior high and high school students in the prefecture found that 12 percent of girls had been subjected to violence. Over 30 percent of male students, meanwhile, said they had been hurt by violence or verbal abuse from partners.

Overall, 30 percent of boys said they couldn't tell their partners that they disliked verbal abuse, compared with 22 percent of girls. When it came to violence, 24 percent of boys and 17 percent of girls said they couldn't tell their partners they were unhappy about it. A total of 23 percent of males and 17 percent of females said they were unable to refuse when asked for a photo showing them in their underwear or naked.

The written survey was conducted between September and November last year. Responses were received from 55 male and 50 female junior high school students, and 300 male and 586 female high school students.

For both male and female students, verbal abuse was the most common reason they were hurt. Thirty-one percent of males reported violence, while 17 percent said their messages on the free communications app LINE had been checked by their partners. Among female students, 23 percent reported sexual coercion, while 16 percent said their LINE apps had been checked.

One boy reported being told by a girl to "die" and that he was "fat," but said he couldn't break up because he liked her, while another said he disliked being hit but had to endure it as a male. One girl said that she had been pressured to delete all the contact details of her male friends on the app LINE.

Kazuo Takeuchi, an associate professor at the University of Hyogo who is familiar with student guidance and provided advice for the survey, commented, "Male students may be worried as they put on a show, not being able to say they don't like something. There are few students who discuss dating abuse with educators, so it's hard to get an idea of the actual situation. Schools probably need to adopt countermeasures of some kind."

Can totally believe it.

“They want to tie the knot eventually. But they tend to put it off as they have gaps between their ideals and the reality,”

This is also completely true - most women have some really crazy ideas and the average guy doesn't want a maid but rather an unpaid servant.

Good points.
Women under the age of 45 or in miscellaneous desperate mode aside I am frequently flabbergasted by how true the one about gurlz has become in the past 10 years or so. I am a card carrying San-Kou (the 3 Talls thing) and all they can do is pick and snipe.
To be fair, the average guy thing is almost neo-traditional, and his Mommy Dearest is sooooooooooo proud of him for it.

No problem with being realistic, the bait and switch (or cum inside me if you really love me) thing is a killer.

Had to laugh a ton - one of my coworkers was telling me how cheap her husband is - he apparently complains she is wasting money by turning up the gas "too much" when cooking something on the stove. Fucking cheap! Didn't want to laugh but damn, that is fucking bad (and I know some fucking cheap people).

The gurlz still do dumb shit when confronted with, for example, the dude from the Dandy House CM (who is gayer than Boy George).....

Ehm... I have the same complaint toward me bitch...

She always think more gas is quicker when cooking and she manage to trigger the fire alarm on a weekly basis. Survival rate of the teflon frying pans is abysmall.

That level of nickel and dime penny pinching, to mix the moneyphors, is probably an underlying aspect of the 20 year economic doldrums. It's almost mental it's such a source of pointless satisfaction and useless economy. I have been told with obvious pride that we saved 432 yen over last month's hydro bill.........at which point I stopped obeying the Short Shower Rule and lived like a profligate, burning that single 500 yen coin like I was Big Daddy hizzelf.
BTW, I agree about being realistic, but what I mean is how unrealistic the demands of those women can seem when out and about and yapping, though they might just be blowing off steam, TBF.

Most recent unrealistic expectation I've heard is a 7,000,000円 Tokyo Disney wedding...buy there are plenty of freeters who have no shame in saying they don't want to/plan to work and just want a free ride. Maintaining the house and cooking apparently aren't in their cards either. (though I suspect divorce or the eternal single life is)

Back to cheapness, heard all kinds of weird stories about hubbies who pinch yen to ridiculous degrees. Zero research or planning goes into their purchases, simply "buy whatever is cheapest."

That level of cheapness is the new yowachin machismo mixed with a touch of Taihen masochism and voluntary abnegation, all rolled up in a syrupy sauce of self-aggrandising rationalisation. Takechan has it. Like with girls' weights, it's the absolute number that counts, not the ratio, or value as we might naively suggest. Given their pay lately, I can see where it comes from but it's usually stupid and self-indulgent. You should see the rolled eyes from friends or colleagues when I order Hire Tonkatsu instead of Ro-su. Even if the price is the same the Hire portion is smaller, so I'm a sucker. I also buy non-disposable clothing such as Montbell over Uniqlo, which is heresy.

PS NEWS FLASH I knew Hire-katsu was tenderloin or fillet because it's like Danish schnitzel, but it appears as though Ro-su katsu is Loin Chop. Now I know. This internet thing Wagyl talks about is aces.

Idiot cousin who knocked up his gf had a 7 million yen wedding at Imperial Hotel in Osaka. She is pregnant, his boss gets up to tell everybody the reason they are getting married is the entire knocked up thing, and the dumbass went out with his friends drinking until 7 AM. Not to mention one of them made a 10 minute powerpoint for a speech (to be fair, I thought the idea was good - they are all MRs for Takeda and basically it was a knockoff of Takeda's pitch to Drs, but entirely too long).

I thought 70 mill for a wedding sounded about mid-range, though I would fight tooth and nail to oppose any such plan. I prefer Shotengai class weddings: rent a local hall, put on a spread, and put the word out to the neighbourhood. Most of the people that aren't really being invited know it and you get to meet some fun and funky people, and see some great Hisashiburi neighbourhood reunions. As an emic criticism, middle classers don't know how to have fun without being prancing ponces. If you have to ask whether you can afford frou frou it means you can't, and little is more vulgar than trying too hard.

The price of the wedding depends on how dumb one is. When we were meeting with the flower person (who was a complete dolt anyway) we could hear the bride next to us say how she was trying to save money by not spending more than 200k on takasago flowers. As missus and I are talking to dumb hotel chick about 60k in total on flowers for our wedding

I guess it helps when the family has their own temple, ikebana practitioner, and the father is a priest but I spent 0 yen on my first wedding. Something tells me the second won't be the same budget level.

Do Tane-uma bridegrooms normally pay?

At the risk of sounding downright understanding, wedding ceremonies are a huge part of their symbolic gift/exchange economy, often the one chance for a nice girl to get what she wants when she wants it, and I think we can all recognise they have a passion for cut flowers that makes us roll our eyes and me sneeze. It's an Ancient Peoples thing. The South Asian weddings in Vancouver are a measurable portion of the national GNP.
I would save the money and either build something or just blow it on a trip, and cut flowers are an abomination right up there with one use plastic containers.

I would never have weddinged my wife, if it wasn't for the visa that she needed in order that we could stay together. So the whole thing and its expense was kind of a tax. We were just a group of five and it was only for lunch though, so it was bearable.

Told my boss the cost of my wedding and he said I would be better off using it as a down payment (only 1.5mln yen).

One of missus classmates from ES (she went to a private one) called off her engagement recently - apparently the dude's family gave her 4mln yen for 結納金 and when it got broken off they refused to return any of it.

If I have a son and some dumb broad's parents want a couple million yen present (or really expensive, by then yen might have the value of a Zimbabwean Dollar) I am totally showing up with a contract that says it isn't a present.
