Everybody could do with a bit of Omamori

Postby Steve Bildermann » Wed Oct 22, 2003 4:14 pm

In Japan charms, amulets and talismans are collectively known as Omamori. Literally, the word omamori means to "protect" or "defend". They are intended to offer protection against a wide range of life's problems and uncertainties: sickness, shipwrecks, fires, painful childbirth, bankruptcy, and other vicissitudes.

I wonder what you folks do when you need a bit of luck?

Personally I always make it a point to drop a few hundred yen in the buddaman's collecting bowl when ever I see him stading on the corner. He's never let me down. Something good always happens the same day I contribute a few coins.

I have carried omamori when taking exams. The one I used came straight from the education o-tera in Nagasaki (forget the name, though...something something tenmangu.)

Another source of good luck: the emerald buddha at Wat Phra Khao in Bangkok. I got what I prayed for. Maybe I should send a donation to the Wat out of respect.

I've got St. Philomena, the patron Saint of Parking & Lost Causes, tag-teamed on the flip-side with my Let's-Safety-Driving Omamori in my car. 8)
