So far my taxi experiences in Japan have all been pretty good. Had drivers recommend routes that were more expensive (still in the right direction, and probably faster), but when I tell them the route I want they always take it. Had some guys who got lost or fucked up the destination, and they've always stopped the meter or refunded part of the fare.

Worst cab experience was in Singapore. Not only did the old guy have no clue where to go, he cut a fart that nearly melted the seat covers.

How's it going American people in Japan? Look, I'm here for one reason. John is my brother, and I have some issues with the loser who posted this "news." First, since when is it NEWS when someone has an altercation with a cab driver? Don't you have anything better to do with your pathetic and apparently utterly boring life than to take a tiny little story in a tiny little Japanese paper, and try to make it bigger than it is? Like when you decided to move to Japan and find little tiny women to make your little tiny penis look bigger.
Now its true that someone could have searched and found this story about John, but because of you, it now pops up immediately on a google search. Congratulations small penis.
So lets go through what ACTUALLY happened before it was all embellished by the Japanese police and press. John was in the cab with only 2000 yen (why? I don't know). He didn't walk off without paying the "measly" fare. He didn't have it on him. He and the driver had agreed to a fare of 2000 yen. The driver knew exactly what he was doing. He knew John had been drinking, and changed the fare after they had agreed on a price. He knew that John's story would never be believed because Japanese people (in Japan...not in the US) don't like Americans (gaijin=outsider=not worthy of my time). They argued and the driver assaulted John. John DID NOT punch the driver in the face. The driver flagged down a cops and told them that he had refused to pay (anything) and that he had been assaulted. John was immediately arrested with no investigation and locked up with no phone call, no charges...NOTHING. They were legally able to hold him for 23 days without a charge or a phone call. Finally they charged John with ROBBERY RESULTING IN BODILY INJURY!! Are you kidding me? The cab driver immediately got fitted with a neck brace and took off two weeks of work. In the end, he settled for a nice piece of cash, and John was let out. This guy knew EXACTLY what he was doing, and has likely victimized other foreigners this way as well. That's the story, but even if the story was exactly as the paper printed it, how is it NEWS and worthy of all this discussion, and stalking a man and posting his dating site profile??? You should be ashamed of yourselves!! Where I am from, the cab driver would've been arrested for putting his hands on a customer. Just remember douchebag who originally STALKED John and posted this...what goes around comes around...and you'll get your's. My suggestion: apology and erase this thread afterwards.

Hey Pete,

Nice work in cementing your rep on the first post.
If your brother shares your self-control, you've given us good reason to believe that he might have been violent.

When I first came to Japan it was common for taxi drivers to ignore foreigners when we tried to hail them. Over the years this became less and less of an issue.

You don't agree on a fare when you take a cab in Japan, they have meters, and the amount they charge is regulated.

Although I haven't experienced it recently that's definitely happened to me. It usually only happened in Roppongi. However, that last time I can remember was at Tokyo Station a couple of years ago and it was particularly infuriating because my friend and I were waiting in line for a taxi and when it was our turn the driver told us that he couldn't pick up passengers there because it wasn't the front of the taxi queue despite that fact that two groups had just got taxis at the same spot in from of us and there were no other taxis in front. I knew that was bullshit so I argued with him a little but he said "sumimasen" and moved forward about 1 meter and opened his door for a Japanese guy. I fucking lost it at that point, cut in front of the Japanese guy and stuck my head in the taxi and started yelling at the driver while he tried to make some bullshit excuse about how that was the proper pick up spot for taxis. He tried to drive away and started running over my foot but luckily I was able to get it away from the path of the tire. Then I slammed to door and hit the side window of the cab really hard with my palm and it vibrated so violently I thought it would break. I guess it's best it didn't but part of me wishes it had. Anyway, he drive off without a passenger and we go the next taxi. Interestingly the Japanese guy I cut off from getting a taxi wasn't angry and seemed sympathetic.

I'm sympathetic...extremely. My heart really and truly does go out to your brother for being caught doing silly things that many people do. And to you, too, for sticking up for him. But you should look up the Streisand Effect.
Your brother should consider himself fortunate that his Japan experience doesn't include a criminal conviction, though the implication (and media reports) is just that, having agreed to a settlement, which is the only material evidence in the case. Unfortunately, you perpetuating the incident is not helping it disappear from Google...(it never does). Provocative comments could be even more painful. Trust me from bitter experience: these are usually cases where, wrong or right, silence is golden, but I'm not sure if too many Merkins know that one. For example, you feel your brother was wronged: perhaps he was. The net effect, however, is to keep the story going, which keeps it on Google. Say, for example, this thread was removed as you demanded, Google has it. Be thankful that it hasn't been picked up by crusaders who don't fancy the idea of white Merkins clobbering poor, hard-working Japanese.
Anyway, I just want to point something else out, too: It's wrong to say your brother was stalked, even under U.S. definitions of such laws: The information posted here was an item your brother had voluntarily disclosed in a public place. You'd have a better argument saying that his image rights were violated. A Japanese court may side with him, provided he goes through a process that could take several years and can gather sufficient evidence that the violating of his rights damaged him. There's no punitive damages in Japanese law. It's hard to see him winning, though, considering he posted the image in the public domain himself.
Well, I really am sorry. Believe me, I know what it's like. I'm sure this is becoming an increasingly painful experience for your brother. Wait until he needs to look for another job.
I'm really sorry to see this blow up to what must seem out of all proportion.

So why are you posting again? It's been a long time between drinks. What happened to your bruv in the end? I'd be more sympathetic except I've always had a rule of making sure I don't go home when extremely pissed by myself - not in my home country and definitely not in another country.

Your bruv was a drunk mess waiting for a problem with a Japanese taxi driver. 1 thing smart people know or learn very quickly in Asia, anywhere in Asia (and other countries) is not too get so drunk that they take a swing at an arsehole or a swing back at an arsehole who does it first. Drunk or not. The law is not your friend and the natives will side with each other.

Oh, me?

I am just fine, thank you.

Granddaughter is ugly and autistic...so they say...but who cares? Once they let me, I'll be retiring soon. Life is good when you're the Emperor.

Was this your brother ..or you?
