Thanks! The JT changed the title/lede of the story to just the dead boy and that title change killed the link.

It's a shame this video was suppressed---the reaction was the crowd was a trip.

Holy object lesson in idiocy Batman. I would have thought that for a public installation that the fire department would have been required to inspect and OK it. The event organizers seem to have been under the delusion that wood shavings are safe, and not, oh, highly flammable especially when surrounded by a heat source like LED lights. Now if this had been created by art students ignorance of this might be excusable, but was supposed to be built by technology students. The complete lack of understanding of flammablity probably explains why nobody found it prudent to have any fire fighting equipment nearby which I am pretty sure is a legal requirement for wooden structures.

Yup. Wood shavings liberally draped over a wooden structure with a lightbulb buried in the middle. That's a fire hazard even without the lightbulb.

Dumb ... stupid ... idiotic ... moronic ...
I'm afraid none of those words even come close. "Homicidal" is more like it.

Woodshop 101. Unbelievable.

a heat source like LED lights

The flammability of the wood shavings or sawdust aside, I think the students assumed that LED bulbs generally giving off lower temperatures in the 50 to 60 degree Celsius range (versus incandescent bulbs which are roughly double in temp.) were "safe". No one taught them that that points of resistance in metal parts connecting the socket can get very very hot ... and I am pretty certain that is what led to the fire.

From a different example of a breakdown of an inexpensive Chinese-made multi-array LED lamp ... you can at least see how there are definitely parts that will heat up significantly ... and if the bulbs in the Design Festival simply had some part of those super-heated metal parts exposed or poorly-insulated ...it's easy to understand how the fire likely started:

Like I said in my post above, it was a serious fire hazard even without the lightbulb. Wood can give off flammable gases when heated. A stray spark from a cigarette could have set that mess off, or it could have ignited spontaneously (never seen a pile of wood shavings or dust smoking without any added heat?).

Dumbfounded.

I saw some pictures on TV that appeared to show the structure liberally festooned with shavings - They were using then as curtains to add to the fun of climbing around in the thing. So yeah, not only wafer thin wood but also exposed to the maximum amount of oxygen and nicely proximate to each other.

The lights, according to the latest TV news, weren't even the LED lights that were thought to be used in the display but regular incandescent ones:

The students and supervising professor - with the exception of preferred "pedigree" - sound like the ideal employee for TEPCO.

Nice find. I saw something like the top picture - ie half on fire and they look like curtains. The lower picture shows they actually used the stuff as packing - . And incandescent lamps - well known for producing as much heat as light. And if I am not wrong those fittings allowed contact with the bare bulb. Bloody hell.

bare light blub and plenty of wood chips....

the only consolation is that 5 year old kid still has only weak immature self-consciousness so his fear toward death and pain would have not been so strong. and the parents will get ton of money from both the exhibitor and the manager of this event. and and when all is said and done, its not so difficult to make a new life-form.

I'm guessing "no". You should tell my wife having kids is easy, I'll make sure to get some popcorn and watch the fireworks from afar.

More like this kind of thing. Halogen work lamp up to 500 Watts. Hot as buggeree and cleverly used as an uplighter so the shavings can fall into it and straight on to the bulb itself.

Up to 500W?!!!

Last heat lamp I saw was only half that....and mounted upside down in a wooden structure filled with wood shavings. This is beyond Chugokumitai level negligence.

Jesus!

I also spotted the power bar on the ground there as well ... which reminded me of something I had no idea about previously ...

1. A power bar is not the same as a surge protector ... and the latter can help your digital equipment from getting fried.

2. Surge protectors should be replaced ... if they've protected you from previously unseen surges, they may actually be functioning as regular power bars...
http://www.howtogeek.com/212375/why-and ... protector/

And for extra cluelessness revealed ... if your power bar, that you thought was a surge protector, has black scorch marks and signs of melting ... you were that close to a lovely home fire....

It is interesting to watch how the papers and wide shows are misreporting this. Everyone seems to be focused like moths on the lamp and they don't seem to understand the difference between wood chips, wood shavings and sawdust.

Without the wood shavings there would have been no fire. To me the idea of putting wood shavings on a jungle gym is not far removed from pouring gasoline over it -sooner of later it would get ignited.

Yep, the child didn't have a chance. I make bonfires regularly and it's amazing how much heat can be generated in only a few seconds when you have that kind of tinder in there and add a spark. (I'm usually using one of those kusayaki torches but last week mine crapped out on me so I sent a fireball at it with a lighter and some bug spray)

they don't seem to understand the difference between wood chips, wood shavings and sawdust.

the meaning of japanese 木屑(kikuzu) includes not only wood chip but also wood shaving, sawdust.

and accoding to the internal information, originally the light blub was used to assemble the exhibition. but at the very day of the incident, someone "wrongly" set it to inside the exhibition. there is a probability that there is someone bearing ill will.

Was there on Sunday but had left before the fire. The base of the structure had about a foot of loose shavings at the base. Staff were there sweeping strays back in and cleaning them off kids when they were leaving.

日本工業大学 is typically a so-called f-rank univ. i guess all you need to pass the entrance exam is just to write your name on it so there is a high probability that almost all of the students are weak-headed ones. but judging them weak-headed just only by this time incident is plainly a fallacy of composition. your reasoning is invalid in the entry level. in fact in the future, there is a possibility that just only one guy among the weak-heads might discover a tech supporting the whole j-economy. and if the univ produces the just only one guy, its no problem to call the univ successful even if the others are all dumb.

You can also say that there is a possibility that just only one guy among the rapists and murderers otherwise incarcerated or executed might discover a tech supporting the whole j-economy. and if allowing criminals to be free in the outside community produces the just only one guy, its no problem to call a zero-incarceration policy successful even if the others are all continue to commit crimes and create victims in the wider society.
