The japanese invented methamphetamine in 1919 and ヒロポン was legal far after the "american occupation". But the 'americans outlawed weed? Truth is only the 'americans cared about cannabis. The locals were already buying harder stuff from the drug store, just like late 1890's 'america.

Japan was spared from the opium wars.... officially. Truth is, the locals like getting fucked up.... and fucking. Sorry if I am being too frank. It's been the way for hundreds of years and many gaijin benefit from it.

Japanese society in a nutshell: If I'm not affected, I don't give a fuck.. If i can profit, even better. If all this can happen without pissing off the political cunts... I win.

Related?

Not sure why Japan would want to stick their pecker in that particular hornet's nest, though.

Some quick and dirty maths showed loitering time for a fully fueled E767 from Hamamatsu near the Senkakus is about 10 hours. For the SCS I was surprised that it still worked out to about 6 hours. The real situation is probably more since I think it's unlikely a 767 filled to the gills with fuel will make it off the 8000ft runway in Hamamatsu in hot weather, and they can always fill up in Okinawa. I guess it depends if it was outgoing only or not.

As posted before, J-AWACS has no aerial refueling capability (yet).

China threw a typical crybaby pissy fit when they got them and this was the compromise.

Good for him

BART janitor grossed $270K in pay and benefits last year

Liang Zhao Zhang’s job is to clean up BART stations in downtown San Francisco and clean up he does: He swept in $162,000 in overtime pay last year, records show.

Call Zhang the super janitor, an extraordinarily high earner in a field where the beloved school custodian rarely brings home more than $50,000 a year.

Zhang grossed $235,000 in 2015, four times more than his base pay as a janitor. Benefits brought his total cost of employment at the rail agency to more than $270,000. And records show this isn’t the first time he raked in six-figure compensation at BART. Zhang received a combined $682,000 in pay and benefits over the last three years.

“Where do I sign up?” joked Lionel Hsu, a BART rider on Tuesday.

But Hsu, who commutes by BART from his home in Contra Costa County to Oakland, said he doesn’t fault workers who take advantage of OT shifts to make more money. “It’s BART’s fault too,” he said. “It’s poor management, it’s poor financial planning.”

Cambodia Minister Slams Chinese Road Builder’s Work
Public Works and Transport Minister Sun Chanthol once again castigated a Chinese construction company, as well as a consulting firm it had hired, over poor quality road works after it was tasked with improving National Road 5.

In a video posted on the ministry’s Facebook page, Mr. Chantol was seen yelling at two men, one from the construction company and the other from the consulting firm, for constructing low-quality roads which had loose asphalt and potholes only months after its refurbishment.

The same construction company was also responsible for a section of shoddy renovation on National Road 6, which the minister reprimanded them for last week.

“Frankly speaking, I would like to say that I do not trust this [consulting company] anymore.”

While the ministry did not disclose the name of the construction company in the Facebook video, Mr. Sorya confirmed to Khmer Times that Shanghai Construction Group was responsible for the work on National Road 5.

“This Chinese construction company [Shanghai Construction Group] also won the contract to improve a section of national roads 5 and 6 as well,” he said.

Shanghai Construction Group secured the $248.8 million contract to refurbish and widen National Road 6 to between seven and 12 meters. The contract, funded by the Chinese government, started in 2013 with an estimated 42-month completion time.

and also
In August, the ministry also found that the Hanshin Engineering and Construction Company, a South Korean firm that won the contract to improve National Road 21, violated its contract by hiring a subcontractor to do the job.

Mr. Chanthol said then that his ministry had performed many road quality tests on National Road 21. The results indicated that the road had not been constructed to standards stipulated in the contract, but seeing as the road was not yet completed, the company should have more time to make improvements, he said.

I thought this might just be a bit of the usual Chinese-bashing common in the blogosphere, but it's not only blogs, the NYT and AP have written about it, which would lend a fair bit of credibility to the story.

Secret Back Door in Some U.S. Phones Sent Data to China, Analysts Say
WASHINGTON — For about $50, you can get a smartphone with a high-definition display, fast data service and, according to security contractors, a secret feature: a backdoor that sends all your text messages to China every 72 hours.

Security contractors recently discovered preinstalled software in some Android phones that monitors where users go, whom they talk to and what they write in text messages. The American authorities say it is not clear whether this represents secretive data mining for advertising purposes or a Chinese government effort to collect intelligence.

Yeah, I wouldn't have posted it if it was just some tinfoil hat shit. Not really sure if it was intentional on the manufacturers who sell overseas but either way, makes a good case for staying away from Chinese smart ho's

So how can I check whether my Lenovo has this firmware on board? Not that I am that worried about it even if it does.

The reason you should be worried about something like this, even if you have nothing in particular to hide, is that information about you makes it easy to scam you.

I do, but never with my phone. And I thought they had encrypted pages so the number was not send in a readable format. Looking around it seems the issue also affects Lenovo laptops and desktops. Great.

I'll have a little look around but what is reported is the collection of data on who I call (no-one because the SIM doesn't do it), who I text and what I say (no-one for ditto reason) and where I go. I don't care if they collect data on where I go when I take the thing with me (never anywhere interesting more's the pity) and I never use it for any transactions of any kind.

According to this article (from Feb. 2016), you can check your phone's chipset on GSMArena, and determine if it is one of the dastardly ones that have spyware* built-in (Lenovo in particular is mentioned).
*Apparently it is a debug option, which was used to test “telecommunications interoperability” in China...
And, according to the article, this particular vulnerability can only be activated on phones running Android 4.4 (KitKat).

That's what a quick search turned up, but this problem probably goes much deeper, and possibly/probably affects many more phones.
I am currently looking into options to replace my ancient Sony Xperia with an unlocked phone, and some of the Chinese-made flagships looked quite enticing. Maybe not so much now... :???:

Ta. Mine's Android 6.0 and a much later version of the chipset so that vulnerability isn't present. However there seems to be at least two more being discussed. One that collects usage data, especially of calls and texts and sends it back to China for god knows what reason and cyber crime malware added by vendors before sale. The former is the maker's doing, the latter isn't and depends on who sold the phone to you or the person you bought it from.

Interesting that the banks are pushing us to use phones rather than PC's. One new bank in the UK is only available via a phone.

It's getting to the point where not having a dumbphone is commensurate to not having a phone phone in the 70s/80s/90s, socially and practically, and certainy from general perceptions of economic status.
Just for fun, does anybody have even 2 good reasons why I should get one? Other than for chicks I don't have one good one yet, and Just to Fit In isn't going to work yet. And now there's this, which is creepy and worrisome.

I have one from work and I really don't see the point other than turning us into zombie drones.

It's appalling to see parents with children locked into their phones. Back in the UK I saw a guy bottle feeding his kid while staring at his phone, kid was looking at him like WTF? Raising a generation of sociopaths.

I take your points, but here are three good reasons (IMO) to have a telephone system internet connected mobile device:

I can listen to BBC radio 4 or 5 in the car.
I can log on here to revel in the intellectual cut and thrust of the repartee when I am away from home.
I can check my email when I am away from home.

Numbers 2 and three consume perhaps 20 seconds but I like being able to do it. I don't want to actually use the thing as a phone - I still have a flip phone for that.

Quite easy to check.

Look at the bottom of the device and if it states "Made in China", it has spyware installed.

Yes.

No kidding.

It's why I never buy Lenovo...
