This Year's Flu Jab

Postby Wage Slave » Thu Dec 01, 2016 10:16 am

Anyone else struggling a bit with the vaccination this year? Painful arm for days and the equivalent of a heavy cold for me. It's worth it no doubt but can't help feeling a bit pissed off about it.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Fine here. Did it a couple of weeks ago.

Maybe you had some bugs incubating away when you had the shot? Or perhaps your immunity was compromised due to tiredness or some other cause?

I get why YokoHammer would do it, being in the catchment as it were, but why would a strapping young buck like WS get one? Just curious. Hope you feel better soon.

My guess is that it involves high concentration exposure to snotty nosed kids.

Not that many small kids these days but I do meet quite a lot of people every week plus my not so kids are pretty good at gathering and bringing back bugs from the local community. Anyway, hopefully better by tomorrow. Doing my bit for herd immunity as well I suppose.

I didn't get my flu vaccination, but still got a heavy cold, so there you go...

Yeah, I figured it was a rugrat factor. So is that to protect them from you or you from them? I am all for immunisation, but outside the vulnerable categories it seems to me that flu shots have a manufactured need aspect and that either getting it or not is a better public health measure. I am not oppposed to it or anything, FTR, just mildly curious or skeptical of the broader need. I get why somebody that can't afford to get it would go for a jab. I find needles scary so I prefer to get my immunity the olde fashioned way.

You may be right about that - and in many countries that is the view taken. On the other hand, flu is not something I'd like to deal with if there's a choice. It's a proper potentially life threatening disease all right.

Right, fair enough. I would jab that if it's life threatening at your age you need more exercise, but I have 10 or so years on you so maybe I should STFU and go in and get poked. :!:
'ceptin that needles done be scary ;)

Except in 1918...

Most influenza outbreaks disproportionately kill juvenile, elderly, or already weakened patients; in contrast, the 1918 pandemic predominantly killed previously healthy young adults. Modern research, using virus taken from the bodies of frozen victims, has concluded that the virus kills through a cytokine storm (overreaction of the body's immune system). The strong immune reactions of young adults ravaged the body, whereas the weaker immune systems of children and middle-aged adults resulted in fewer deaths among those groups.

Right, well put. I was speaking more of garden variety This Year's Flu, not a Super Flu of Mass Death like that one, or the bad one in China a few years back. And I do get that the Spanish Flu probably looked run of the mill until it hit Tsunami level.
Anyhoo, a good and fair rebuttal, and again, I AM NOT ANTI-IMMUNISATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :cry2:

:biggrin2: No worries there. Just my kneejerk contrariness raising it's spiky head again. I much prefer the safety of the herd. I wonder how many Trump/Brexit voters are also anti-immunization? Seems like a perfect pairing.

LOL, immunizations cause.....immunity!!! The horror!

While we're in on the topic, edumacate us Kuro. What's the Canadian remedy for the flu? Hot maple syrup or some sort of variation of sugar on snow?

Diatomaceous earth and colloidal silver mixed with a bit of witch hazel will even easily cure any cancer, so should be fine for the flu and everything else, too. If in Canada, add maple syrup for good measure of course. Odaijini :)

Still not feeling very good but I am now of a view it is very little to do with the flu jab. I just happened to have a cold on board but not yet manifest when I had the thing. This happens quite often with vaccinations. People get sick all the time, sometimes with quite horrible things that strike out of nowhere. By the laws of chance a vaccination and illness will coincide now and again. Cue 2 + 2 = 5 and demands for substantial monetary compensation. To be fair people are often desperate for the money to fund treatment and care, in the US anyway, but of course the root of that problem lies elsewhere.

More seriouzlee: now are the shots still cooked for the statistical strain for winter 2016 or for the actual reported strains ?

or c: I'm once again drowning between my fading memory and the downright byzantine number of flu kinds and vaccine availability

(so it would be perfectly understanable to go "fuck this shit, shoot me whatever you got..." even if unlike Russel I'm still in the age group that have to pay for the shots)

Never get flu vaccinations, rarely get sick, in 16 years at my current company I've only had two days off sick. Unlike the youngsters, who sniffle twice and take days off.

I had a my worst ever futsukayoi last week...and I almost never get those. Even after 3 days of solid boozin in Vegas, I wasn't near as bad. Sure enough, after the next day passed, I was still a bit sick...methinks the wings and pizza came with a side of food poisoning and it just helped add to the chaos.

I was poked last night by a lovely lady doctor and unlike in other years have no side effects at all so far. I keep knocking on wood, though, for the time being.

However; all she seemed to be interested in were my pants. She said they were kawaii and she had been looking everywhere for pants like these and couldn't find them and where did I get them from  First time ever that someone would compliment me on fashion.

But then, she is a doctor and has access to drugs, so she might just have been stoned...

North American pants or Japanese/British pants? And why was she looking at your pants? And was she hot?
Is the flu shot a bum jab??? :cry2:

PS Men's boxers as room wear seems to be a thing with 40 plus professional women lately. With that and a nice flannel shirt on top I could get quite used to trying to get back into my pants, let me tell you. :biggrin2:

No bum jab, but the flap had to come down, so she could listen to my heart beat.

This is what might get you laid in a lady doctor's world :)

So, got this heavy cold with 39+ degrees fevers.

I went to two doctors on Saturday, but neither of them could detect flu, leaving me with a conundrum of what it actually is.

Saaaa,
I'm also just spent a week sick.

Every year I get the flu shot, and this year (and every year) I get some other kind of nasty cold that's not technically "flu", grrr.
