Saaaa,
I'm also just spent a week sick.

Every year I get the flu shot, and this year (and every year) I get some other kind of nasty cold that's not technically "flu", grrr.

It is a strange cold.

The second doctor could establish by a blood test that it was not a bacterium. But he gave me antibiotics anyway, which does not seem to work, predictably.

So, it's a virus, and a pretty nasty one at that. My temperature almost reached 40 degrees today. And my throat is pretty sore.

:wall: Time to find a new doctor? My local one is about the same but is always open to prescription suggestions I've researched beforehand. More reasonable doc is a bit of a drive but is first choice when it:s something like you describe. I also have had the "definitely the flu!" yet tests said it's not the flu bug several times the past few years.

Two things to remember:
1) Although they try to predict which strain of flu will be on the loose, they generally get it wrong and your flu vaccination this year will be great at protecting you from last year's flu.

2) Japanese doctors are big on o・mo・te・na・shi. We can't have patients going home without some party favours/a bag of omiyage, even if they would be better off without medication and just having some rest. I think they are afraid that they will get a bad reputation if people think "I went to the doctor and he didn't do anything, just told me to take it easy!" Even if you try to make it clear to them that you understand that the antibiotics have no effect against a viral infection and that you will just get diarrhoea and so you also don't want the dose of porcine intestinal flora in a misguided attempt to relieve the side effects of their unnecessary, superbug-breeding overprescription, you still get them.

OK, I basically agree, but in this case I actually wanted antibiotics, because I was coughing up this green stuff, which indicates a bacterial infection (but not necessarily). And sometimes a viral infection can get companion of a bacterial infection, which I wanted to avoid in any case.

(Is it any surprise that the wikipedia photo of phlegm -- and I need that to addition to the entry -- is the "own work" of a user with a likely Chinese name?)

Technically, the word phlegm is to be preferred, because it leaves open the presence of other colors in the mix.

Anyway, let's be phlegmatic about it.

I suppose the other colours are not strictly phlegm, just Flem-ish.
