Disturbances in the wa

Postby matsuki » Wed Mar 22, 2017 6:30 pm

Post your instances of not so wa-abiding locals (or gaijin lifers) here.

Yanpa may be familiar with this place...

I love driving by this house...and when I say by, I mean around.

No idea the story behind it but looks like an obvious last residential hold out on the street expansion. Less surprisingly, the rest of the street further north is complete, yet reduced by two lanes thanks to scattered k-rails for no apparent reason. Great for gridlock traffic on the weekends! So much for social/gov pressure? Eminent domain fail? This proper-sized street with islands and (gasp) sidewalks actually makes the area look somewhat modern.

I know it well, we must be near neighbours.

I don't think it is about money, I think they really don't want to give up their place in the world. In a way I agree with them, there are enough roads already.

My sister in law lives in a similar house.

But it looks like she is going to make an agreement with the city.

the government can't force you to take the ED payment here, they can only prevent you from reselling the land. You never saw grave yards in the middle of the street?

those recent road expansions in greater tokyo area should have been done in 70-80's, or at the latest 90's. but damn bureaucrats and politicians havent done until recent coz the road construction revenues had been preferentially distributed to the provincial areas. road expansion destroys the local culture and community. that house and the owner is one of the victims caused by the long-time unfair revenue distributions.

Wait, wait, you mean they pay you for erectile dysfunction? Should I stop buying from Canadian online pharmacies now?

Of course, Matsuki, you saw examples of this quite regularly, every single time you went through Narita Airport. Past tense because I am not sure if that issue has been completely resolved or not.

They probably should have been done even before that...the only reason there are some previous decent streets in the area is because they are former runways from that whole war debacle.

I'm still in awe of the nutty jiji that gave me that whole "Silver member eh? That's nice, I'm gold." comment.

Ooh it appears that I was too obscure, and Matsuki has forgotten all the little farms in the way of runways three to five planned for Narita, and the very obvious gaps in odd corners of runway two where farming was going on.

I was unsure if that issue had been resolved because while there are often reports that the farmers protest at Narita has collapsed, I don't know how much I can rely on them and I am not sure if there are still holdouts.

Ahhh, will look for that next week. My イメージ of Narita is just lots of dead grass. I feel like I've never seen any of that grass green at any time of the year.

It is funny, the things you are sure everybody already knows about, which they evidently don't. http://jto.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/ ... 424f2a.jpg

Didn't you ever wonder why they had extra security checks at Narita? The often violent protests were the original reason, before they just became habit, and the growing security circus of this century normalised it.

LOL, the defiance!! Whatever the reason for holding out is, you'd think they would make more money selling ad space on billboards or something along those lines...than tarmac salad farming

I sometimes wonder how long some families have been living in some areas. Jomon jidai?

Yup, was surprised to see was still there earlier this year.

Here's another, less obvious hold-out: https://goo.gl/maps/CBc4mqx4gc92 (street view).

Ultimately the road peters out over the border in Saitama onto an average 2-lane suburban road with no prospect of continuing northwards; there used to be a parcel of vacant land which looks like it would be the start of a further extension but it's been built on very recently.

I guess the intent is to divert most traffic onto road (number 24) being built which connects with this one a bit to the south, the future course of which can be traced eastwards and yes there is a graveyard in the way.

That's fucking amazing planning.....new homes are a hard enough sell but a graveyard? I wonder if they could decide to build an elevated road over it or tunnel beneath it? Sounds like enough concrete could be involved to make it worth the construction companies interest.
