I assure you it's more fun to pull out your keitai and start taking video....but the dude slapped the guys knee so I'd probably be hard pressed to not get physical once he did that.

alternatively I wonder what would happen if someone used their phone to call the cops and ask them to meet the train at the next station because of 口暴力

I suspect the people with enough power to be able to prompt the police for such an alleged offence (and one directed at a ketou) are not the type of people who normally ride the Musashino Line.
(Behaving for the public good seems uncommon in Japan, anyway. Barely an hour ago, I noticed a guy stumble and fall heavily down some stairs at a station. Dozens of people saw what happened and only one other stopped before I got there. It was appalling, but fortunately the bloke seemed to be all right and brushed off help).

its totally unproductive to have relations with those angry oyajis on the train and in the other places.

just dodge them, dont bring them into your sight and delete their existences itself out of your brain.

The land of arresting people for Flathead screwdrivers is also the land of arresting people for public insults.

Yes, but the law and its policing are two completely different matters in Japan.

Incidentally, Straya is disgraceful in over-regulating public speech and can get away with it because of a lack of free speech guarantees.

Sound advice, especially if you include internet forums as one of those 'other places.'

There are insecure assholes everywhere...but at least a message of "that shit is unacceptable" was sent with his firing.

Did anyone in Japan get fired for the shitty comments during this?

Nonsense. Why should any organisation have to tolerate people like that? This is not about political correctness, it is about common decency and manners. And, that kind of talk from a journalist gets people badly hurt or even killed.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

The problem with the tweet was that it exposed the hidden insecurity in the general populace: even though they are happy that they won the war they still feel insecure when someone born 30 years after the defeat of his nation demonstrates sporting prowess in a race occurring in the victor nation which is always held on a day when the victors commemorate the sacrifice of those who fought on the victorious side. Any display of that insecurity must be punished!

Or, it was an expression of discomfort that a particular nationality should be allowed to win a race. For no other reason than nationality. Probably not the best public look for a journalist. I can see where some people are not comfortable with someone who expressed that kind of discomfort, reporting the news.

Whether is it for PR reasons or for moral reasons, it cost him his job.

Is it sacrilege for the sporting event to be on a day when the nation should be remembering the sacrifice of those who fought, rather than being distracted by motorsport?

Kiwi restrained for days in Japan dies
Newshub 2017-July-12
A Kiwi man has died after being restrained to a bed in a Japanese psych ward for days, but the hospital is denying any responsibility.
Kelly Savage had been teaching English in Yamato, near Yokohama. The 27-year-old's mental health had been deteriorating after he stopped taking medication because of its side-effects. His older brother Pat - also in Japan - arranged for him to get hospital treatment at the end of April.
But he spent most of the next 10 days strapped to his bed, his family claim, saying that led directly to a heart attack on May 10, which put him in a coma. Kelly died a week later.
