Sacré beurre: fears over croissant price hike as France faces butter shortage

The rise in wholesale butter prices is mainly blamed on falling milk yields across Europe but especially in France, together with rising demand both domestically and internationally and the fact that most milk is used to make cheese or cream, not butter.

At the same time, French farmers complain that they are receiving less for their milk than it costs to produce because Europe has a glut of 350,000 tonnes of powdered milk, which is depressing prices.

French butter stocks melting away amid global croissant craze, especially China's
The Japan Times | AFP-JIJI | Oct. 24, 2017
ILLE-ET-VILAINE, FRANCE —
Gone are the days of the butter mountains when the EU had to step in to mop up surpluses. A new-found taste for full-fat spreads in the West, coupled with rising demand for French pastries in Asia, have created butter shortages in the home of the croissant.
Across the country, shops are finding it increasingly difficult to keep their shelves stocked.
"Because of a shortage of French milk, our suppliers cannot fulfil our butter orders," read a sign last week in an Intermarche supermarket in the northern city of Rouen, situated in the Normandy dairy heartland.

Maybe they can import some from Brexit-Britain.

Even with import duties it will be cheaper than the butter in Japan.

As you can see from the crowded EU Parliament Brexit is a vital issue for the EU, not just for a few bored looking old men milking the limelight & the tax payer.

Well, they positioned the cameras such that as few empty seats were visible...

Anyway, Brexit is turning in a complete shit fest, where both sides are starting to scratch their heads wondering what is happening under their feet.

This monumental waste of money, energy and time still has a long way to run unfortunately. However, it's palpable there is a hardening of opinion amongst the majority that no deal means no Brexit. During the referendum campaign Leave constantly banged on about how nothing could or would change in respect of free trade, the EU would have to strike a deal quickly because we buy so much more from the EU than it buys from us, we are such a big market for German cars in particular, we are leaving the EU not leaving Europe, vast sums of money will be available to spend on the NHS as so on. And on. They won the referendum by a narrow margin on that prospectus and no way can they now shrug their shoulders and say well it's not going to be anything remotely like that but we are leaving anyway. Not without another vote anyway. Hopefully that vote will be a general election rather than another referendum.

And I still think that J Corbyn will emerge as the ultimate winner from this fiasco. Both the UK and the EU will have lost hugely and both will emerge weakened, though the EU will lose a lot less, so they will be seen as the winners. And hopefully it will be a long time before we have another fucking referendum.
It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

why the fuck dont some eikaiwa teaching gaijins start a business of a buttermaker in hokkaido?
i heard not a few buttermakers there will have to close their businesses in the near future just because of a shortage of workers despite there are plenty of demands in the market, though.

I am not an Eikaiwa teacher, but where can I apply?

My butter is delicious, though it is available only in small quantities, since it grows between my toes.

Still it's better quality than what you are used to...

Like all things here a few control all. The head of the butter association was on TV openly admitting, and laughing, that the shortage was engineered. I'm willing to bet that that same association somehow has the ability to block farmers from selling butter if they don't pay their association fee/tax.

Butter is a byproduct of making skim milk. The stuff that comes out of the cow is between 3.5% and 6% fat. Agitating it forces the fat to solidify leaving a lower fat milk and butter. It's not expensive to make.

That said...

Irish man, 32, is crushed to death after 40 tonnes of cheese collapsed on him in a warehouse store room

A 32-year-old man was crushed to death by 40 tons of cheese after a shelf collapsed at the factory where he was working.

Warehouse supervisor Robert Ceremuga, who had a four-month-old daughter named Martina, died as a result of the accident at the VP Foods cold-storage warehouse in Dublin in November 2013.

An inquest heard a shelf rack may have buckled under the weight of the pallets of cheese, and Mr Ceremuga suffered catastrophic injuries.

A forklift driver - who had no formal training - had earlier removed between 30 and 40 pallets from the lower shelves, making the unit top-heavy, The Irish Times reports.

Oh great. :-x Now even more lazy-fuck Hokkaido dairymen will end up throwing in the towel.
Quake in Japan's Dairy Heartland May Mean Milk, Butter Shortage
bloomberg.com| September 7, 2018
Japan’s dairy industry is at risk as a widespread power outage persists following a strong earthquake in the country’s northern island of Hokkaido.
The lack of electricity in Hokkaido, which produces more than half of Japan’s milk, is creating challenges for the island’s farmers. The farms can’t use milking machines on their cows, and any milk supplies can’t be refrigerated. If it drags on, there may be an impact on dairy companies...

Time to reinvent milking by hand.

And they could always use that surplus milk to make cheese.

Amazing guy.

I have contemplated making cheese myself, but gave up on the idea because fresh milk from the cow is not available. The alternative of having a cow myself is not feasible, giving the size of my garden.
