Small plane makes emergency landing on golf course in central Japan
Image
A light aircraft made an emergency landing Tuesday at a golf club in Hyogo Prefecture in the Kansai region of Japan's main Honshu island, local police said.

The Hyogo Prefecture Police Headquarters said it received a message saying a small aircraft had made an emergency landing at a local golf course in the western part of Hyogo Prefecture before 4 p.m. local time.

The local fire department said that the plane was piloted by a single male who escaped from the aircraft by himself.

The fire department said that the pilot, after making the ditch landing, was able to escape from the plane and reportedly walked to ask for help from a guesthouse at the golf facility.

From here the man was taken to hospital, but no other injuries were reported by officials or the Himeji Aioi Country Club.

The club said the plane became lost in the vicinity of the course, which was open at the time to customers.

Representatives from the club said that all those out on the course at the time of the emergency landing had been accounted for and that there had been no injuries as a result of the ditched landing.

Both the local police and fire departments are continuing to investigate the accident.

Leave it to a Brit to fly all the way to Japan in a small plane. Yep, he must be English...

That reminds me of an old flowchart schema from a few decades ago.

You see a lone cyclist in the desert.

Do they have Caucasian features? Yes → They are German
No
↓
Do they have Mongoloid features? Yes → They are Japanese
No
↓
They are a mirage

Seems he's been here for a little while now. Making a break for it and "went down in flames"?

British pilot who built his own plane makes miracle escape
from horror crash which sliced aircraft in two
Colin Hales crash-landed on a golf course in Japan while attempting a round-the-world flight,
but managed to stagger from the wreckage with a broken hip and bruises

A British pilot attempting a round-the-world flight on a self-built plane escaped a horror crash which sliced the aircraft in two.

Colin Hales, 46, built the plane for £8,000 in his shed, but crashed on a golf course in Japan after waiting months for flight paperwork to come through.

Incredibly, he managed to stagger from the wreckage with a broken hip and cuts and bruises.

Dramatic pictures showed the craft had been broken in half by the impact of the crash yesterday afternoon.

Onlookers on the golf course said the tiny 14-ft-long mini plane was written-off.

Staff at the golf course clubhouse witnessed the crash which happened near the first hole and said it was lucky there had been no players nearby when it came down.

After the crash Hales made his way to seek help at the clubhouse and he was taken from there to hospital in a helicopter with "multiple contusions" and a fractured hip according to rescue workers.

He was recovering in hospital yesterday. He crashed at the Himejiaioi Country Club in Hyogo Prefecture in western Japan.

Aerial footage shows the severely damaged plane on a grassy area near a building on the course.

Hales, an aircraft engineer from Staffordshire, built the plane in his shed and had only just been given to go-head to fly in Japan after being at loggerheads for months over paperwork.

He had been grounded in the country for seven months before getting the all clear on June 21 to continue his journey.

He had been complaining on Monday that engine valves were sticking after he was grounded for seven months.

It is thought he was trying to make an emergency landing on the course when he crashed.

Amateur pilot Martin Clintergate, 55, from Norfolk, who has been following Hales's journey on his website said: "He seems to be okay although we haven't got the full picture yet.

"It is such a shame because he has overcome so many obstacles to get this far.

"He has no sponsorship or back up team and for this to happen after getting to go-ahead to continue will be devastating.

"The aeroplane looks written off so that may be the end of the trip."

He had taken off four hours earlier from an airport in central Japan and covered 350 miles when he came down.

It was was the first time that the aircraft had flown since Nov 11, 2016.

According to the Osaka Aviation Bureau Hales was heading for Okanan Airfield having taken off from Niigata Airport earlier in the day.

Hales is bidding to fly around the globe in the two-seater KR2 plane and only carries a spare fuel tanks in the passenger seat and a folding bicycle which he uses to explore some of the countries he lands in.

When he set off on his journey in 2014 he crossed the Atlantic via Iceland and Greenland before reaching Alaska in September last year (2015).

He obtained permission to enter Russian airspace last year - the first amateur-built aircraft ever to do so.

But he faced another delay on the Russian-Chinese border when Chinese officials refused to allow him into their airspace, claiming he posed a military threat.

Instead he diverted to Japan at the end of 2016 only to be met with another long bureaucratic delay before crashing yesterday. Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

The Transportation Safety Commission of Japan has sent two aircraft accident investigators to the site to investigate the cause of the accident in detail.
