You are of course welcome to your opinion. My opinion is that the ladder theory is just another worthless generalization. Although I find many women sexually attractive I am more than capable of having plutonic relationships with them. If you are not capable of that then it is your loss.

Samurai_Jerk wrote:Again, if you are hanging out alone with women I think it's perfectly reasonable for your partner to be uncomfortable or suspicious.

My wife has no problem with it. She also has friends who are male, and that's cool with me too. We have a very stable and trusting relationship.

Samurai_Jerk wrote:Unless maybe they're all little old ladies buying teacher dinner as a thank you.

I enjoyed my time teaching, but I am glad I don't do it anymore. No, I don't have little old ladies buying me dinner as a thank you.

Samurai_Jerk wrote:The fact is, even if you start out with the best of intentions, putting yourself in a situation where something can happen just makes things more dangerous. People love to say "Well I would never do that." Then they end up doing it.

Actually the fact is you are applying what you are (in)capable of to me, and it doesn't fit. Such applications are human nature and there is actually a name for the behavior, but it escapes me right now.

Samurai_Jerk wrote:BTW, I never said I was upset at the shop owner's reaction. Just surprised. I guess I was amused too.

You said you were "shocked" and then said you were "rude" in your response to her.

I'm not trying to tell you how to live your life. Different people are able to accept different things. Life would be damn boring if we were all the same.

I thought that was the Japanese ideal?

I think the word you're searching for is "projection".

just wanted to say thanks to ak for the great post.

she is planning to come to visit me sometime in the next two months. I was into that at first, but now, I don't know. I think I'm ready to move on and start the new year fresh. but if she comes to new york, there's no way I can deny her visit. basically, I've decided, for now, to leave her alone and move forward.

I have a lot more to say, more later...

Postby grounded in japan » Wed Jan 12, 2005 9:32 pm

well i've been with my wife for 9 years now, 5 years as boyfriend / girlfriend when we lived in New Zealand, Hong Kong and Holland and 4 years married in Japan. she is fantastic and i'm really lucky. about the marriage thing, i've never wanted to get married and have kids, but she got pregnant 2 months after we came to japan and we went to the town hall and filled out the forms (no j-marriage crap). now we've got 2 kids. by her own admission, she's not a typical jap although she did become subject to the usual jap stuff when she came back here. i particularly don't like the 6 days a week no holiday shit of her job even though she works for her parents business. i worked for them for 3 1/2 years but refused to work 6 days a week. don't particularly like her family (which is why she came back to japan) and her sister is a real freak - she speaks perfect English but totally ignores me even though until the last time i saw her i'd always tried to be friendly and polite
(being English ) - watch out now bitch !!

anyway, i don't like living in japan or the jap mentality (even though i've met lots of nice ones) - they's dumb bastards as far as i'm concerned and after man years or not wanting to live in England, i now want to go back, but we are kind of committed here until our kids grow up. i probably would have left if she hadn't got pregnant, but then i would have lost the love of my life. the only 2 things i like about japan is that it's really peaceful and there are heaps of good looking chicks (i just look). other than that i think it sucks big time. i have spent many months in Thailand and India and would definately like to live in Thailand although it's probably not as practical as japan.

anyway, definately a success story, but that's down largely to the person my lovely wife is rather than her being japanese or asian.

Hey grounded in japan, dont be too harsh on the average jap! I lived in-country for 5 years and never thought they were dumb asses. What makes you think they are dumb? Is that relative to the english ? :-) Sorry to hear your luck didnt hold-out on the in-laws....I had to wait 1 year before my j-mother-in-law finally gave the 'nod'. Now we get on great, I love going to vistit them whenI have the time and cash. Both me and my wife could have worked in her fathers ery successful business but decided not to, as the old saying goes "family and business dont mix".....I guess if we did things may have gone sour. Also, I see no reason stopping you from going back to your home country. They have a good social security system, and if you cashed up enough you'll find something sure enough. Personally I love Japan and cant wait to go back, concrete and all. I hate Australia, the people here just piss me off (maybe thats what you feel about jap), I WILL go bananas if I stay here more than a few years, I'm planning an exit strategy, so should you! :-)

Woman nabbed for allegedly destroying 54 violins owned by ex-husband
KYODO NEWS - July 25- 22:36
An estranged wife of a former violin maker in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of destroying 54 violins and 70 bows collectively worth around 105.9 million yen ($950,700) ...
...
Midori Kawamiya, a 34-year-old music instrument seller in Tokyo, has admitted to breaking into his home in Nagoya but denied that she damaged the equipment, according to police.
The 62-year-old Norwegian man used to make and sell violins in Nagoya. The damaged violins were made or collected by him and included an Italian one worth about 50 million yen.

Though she violated the basic code of conduct, they won't string her up for her act. If only she would have toned down her emotions, that would have saved a lot of wood.

And to add to that, she'll have to face the music...
