Japanese Couple Buys Farm in Yosemite

El Capitan, Yosemite National Park

File this one under "Dead Nihonjin".
A Japanese man and woman got caught in an unseasonal Sierra blizzard while attempting to scale El Capitan in Yosemite National Park and then froze to death. What a way to go....

ktvu.com wrote:Rescuers also were hard at work on El Capitan, the forbidding monolith that rises up from the Yosemite Valley. Seven people were caught on the face of the mountain by the blizzard, and two died before rescuers could reach them. The others were all located and were either safe or being rescued on Thursday.

The two dead climbers -- a man and a woman from Japan -- were spotted Wednesday by a helicopter crew, dangling lifeless about two-thirds of the way up the 3,200-foot face. The copter was able to hover within a few feet of the bodies, close enough to see that they were blue and had icicles on them, said ranger David Horne.

Their bodies were carried up to the summit late Thursday and were expected to be sent by helicopter to the coroner's office, a park spokeswoman said.

As the storm began to clear Wednesday, a helicopter crew took off and spotted the climbers dangling lifeless about two-thirds of the way up a 3,200-foot face (975 meters) sheer climbing face, said park ranger Deb Schweizer.

"They weren't moving,'' she said. "They didn't seem well-equipped.''

Rangers expected to be able to retrieve the bodies Thursday.

The body of a missing Pacific Crest Trail hiker was found Monday in Kings Canyon National Park.

Park officials were notified Sunday that a group of hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail had discovered a body submerged in the south fork of the Kings River at an elevation of 10,000 feet north of Bench and Marjorie Lakes.

The park’s ground and aviation staff confirmed the location Monday afternoon and recovered the body.

The Fresno County Coroner’s Office identified the body as Rika Morita, a 32-year-old hiker from Japan who was last seen around July 8 in the Rae Lakes area.

One would think that this shouldn't happen. When J-peeps have a hobby, they usually take it so damn seriously that all the fun gets lost. Or is it just the usual 'she's a good driver, you don't need a seat belt' type lack of safety awareness that's all over the place here?

Fortunately, we are left with some beautiful pics she made during her hike...

From reading the PCT threads mentioning her, sounds like the broke off on her own and tried (failed) to cross a river/stream. I'd love to do the PCT, at least the northern areas she was in, sometime but fuck going it alone.

It can also be pretty fucky trying to get along with someone else, matching their pace and personal interests. Going alone sometimes has advantages, but risks as well.

I usually try to avoid attributing different traits to different races, but from what I know of fatal accidents with Japanese victims in Yosemite, they seem to have a lower tolerance to allowing their core temperature to drop. They get killed by a chill where others will survive.

Could be, or is it just how (in what climate zone) you grew up?

Most definitely, though everyone seemed to like this girl well enough. Maybe she was a bit slow?

So you're saying they can dish out the cold but can't take the cold?
