Japanese president of an American company: "There is no work

-life balance to Americans."

:keyboardcoffee:

From Reddit:
This CEO is pretty much an amateur, with no real expertise, and no major American clients. She’s making her money by selling ham-fisted Japanese exceptionalism. It’s obvious from her homepage that she has no idea what she’s doing, but she gets business with Japanese companies by claiming to understand us gaijins, and no one knows enough to tell if she’s bullshitting or not. Spoiler alert: she is.

You may want to complete the title......

There is a bit of truth to this. When I was working in the US my contact was for 50 hours a week and I often worked more, my record was 127. During busy times my company would rent the entire motel down the street so we could seep a few hours and get back to work.

In the US it is YMMV. Amazon, for example, is known as being a place that works people until they have nothing more to give.
Facebook is also supposed to be terrible, as are the big 4 firms during audit season.

At the same time, looked at the company page and agree with what the reddit people say.

What were you doing?

No doubt there are karoshi positions in the US but I find it more than a bit rich for this bitch to make these generalizations against "Americans" when she so obviously is disconnected from them. (it's even worse than the usual nihonjinron exceptionalism you hear here because she should know better....but stereotypes and imeeeji seem to pass as fact for these types." Those crazy level positions are far from the norm and usually come with the pay and perks to motivate you rather than passive aggressively guilt you into the work.

I was a manager for a one of the biggest companies in the world. It was a very good job but the hours sucked at times. My mother was working more than me at a major insurance company. Globalization is totally fucking the idea of a 9-5 job especially when you have team members scattered around the globe. Sure, many people only work 40 hours but these days those same people will not get promotions or raises because they aren't putting up the same numbers as a person working 60 hours. The company can't keep you at your desk and force you to do OT. However, if you don't put in the hours you won't work your way up the ladder.

Sadly, most big companies are like this now. There are very few exceptions.

White collar America has become a slave workforce. Low pay with long hours. It's a result of too many people going to 4 year universities and not enough people going to trade school. The joke here is a licensed plumber, carpenter, electrician or iron worker will make more money and have more leisure time than a graduate with a BA/S.

Low pay in the US is still better than many positions here....but yes, at the end of the day, what good is the money if you have no life besides work to enjoy it?

Many years ago when I was a mere zero in the digital world my boss took me out for a drink. The next day I crawled into work, mid afternoon I still felt terrible so I went to the local chemists and asked for a hangover cure. The ojisan gave me one and when I asked how much I should pay he looked at me with contempt and said the equivalent of "It's on the house, you look like you need it"

I owe that guy a huge debt of gratitude, from that day on I decided to avoid drinking with workmates as much as possible. Sure it affects your promotion prospects, but (though some may disagree) I am still corpus mentis where my peers are starting to show the health implications of too many nights of bad booze and worse food.

So for me the whole work life balance thing is not about how many hours you spend working, I quite like what I do, it's about having the right to say I draw the line here, I'm going home.

I'd give you green snot if I could.

I agree with her to an extent and believe the buttfuck dumb Merkin mentality of anybody being able to become fabulously wealthy destroyed work-life balance for everyone.
