Japanese Technology Spreading Worldwide!

Rwanda has received funding that will enable construction of feeder roads using Do-nou Technology, an ancient Japanese technique that requires only bags, soil and gravel.

‘Do-nou’ is a Japanese word meaning wrapping soil in a gunny bag. The road construction technology, used over 100 years ago in Japan, is a soil reinforcement technique using geotextile materials preferably gunny bags in civil engineering construction.

On Thursday, the Government of Japan signed a grant contract with Community Road Empowerment (CORE), to provide $294,992 for implementing a project named “Sustainable Youth Employment through Road Improvement taking Locally Available Material Based Approach”.

The project will be implemented in four districts (Rulindo, Gakenke, Nyamasheke and Rusizi) in the next 12 months and at least 12 districts will be reached in the next three years.

“Japan will fund this project for the next three years with four districts benefiting each year. The biggest benefits is to create jobs for youth, rural connectivity using very cheap and available materials,” Japan ambassador to Rwanda Takayuki Mayishita said at the signing ceremony.

i dont know whether do-nou is japan originated "technology"or not.

This technique is utilised throughout the third world.

While the concept of sandbags is common worldwide, uses other than to build a defensive wall, against light artillery or flood, are not so common. Those two purposes are by nature temporary. Having had experience using sandbags to repair a potholed road in Japan I can tell you that this Rwandan project will not last long. The road I worked on had traffic of less than ten cars a week, and then only for about seven months a year, but it only lasted a year and a half before it was as bad as it had been before the repair job. Actually it was worse, because now there were plastic fibres from the decaying bags all over the place.

I think a hint in the origins of this sandbag technology can be found in the fact that it has been used in Japan for "over 100 years," i.e. after the Black Ships.

How is this easier than dump some gravel down? Is this massive manual labour really cheaper than renting a dozer and a dump truck for a few days? (I am not trolling, I actually don't know)

Grumpy, you are asking the wrong questions.

It is not about what is easiest, it is about creating youth employment. And community empowerment!!!1!

However, it is cheaper, for the Rwandan government, than the Rwandan government renting machinery, because in this case the Japanese government is paying for it all.

An investigation at the University of Tokyo has found that one of its most prominent scientists, cell biologist Yoshinori Watanabe, committed scientific misconduct in five papers1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Another former member of the same laboratory was also found guilty in the same investigation.

The university has yet to punish Watanabe, but the year-long investigation has already taken its toll. Colleagues report that his lab members have already cleared out and that he lost his only major grant, leaving his career in tatters even before the university issued its judgment.

The case has shaken the community of scientists who study how cells divide, in which Watanabe was a pillar. “Watanabe is a giant of science with incredibly impressive discoveries,” says Iain Cheeseman, a cell biologist at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “These are discoveries that have been validated, repeated, built on, and continue to be central to our understanding of cell division.”

I think this is not a clear-cut case, though his conduct raises some eyebrows. He is willing, though, to correct the inaccuracies in his papers, and it is not exactly as if he falsified data.

Anyway, he lost all his funding, so that is a pretty big punishment. Rules of funding agencies have become very strict in recent years, even overly so. It is sometimes a pain in the ass to spend your funding money in a proper way, because of some truly micro-managers out there.

Finally, don't think that this type of problem does not occur outside Japan. There are some famous cases in the US and the EU too.

It has to do with how the Japanese education system works. In the west post grad students will look at the data and say "WTF?" but here in sun rise land, one does not question the boss.

I will not say for 100% that there are no problems in Japanese research, but I think you two are exaggerating. Researchers tend to be quite open in general, and Japan is no exception.

And on top of that, the discussions at Japanese Workshops (held in Japanese in Japan) are often more aggressive than those at International Conferences elsewhere in the world.

Of course, it also depends on the field, but researchers in the hard sciences often have hard discussions, and often do not have hard feelings afterwards.

Fears are mounting that a billion-pound contract to build a new fleet of ships for the Royal Navy could go to a Japanese company. The move would trigger dismay in UK military circles and would be seen as a major setback for the country’s shipyards, struggling with dwindling order books.

The National Shipbuilding Strategy makes it clear that Royal Navy warships must be built in the UK for reasons of national security. But ministers confirmed in parliament last week that the new fleet solid support ships, which will carry ammunition and explosives, will not be classed as “warships”, which means they can be built by companies outside the UK.

A list released under the Freedom of Information Act reveals that several foreign companies attended the event when the government launched the competition to build as many as three fleet solid support ships at an estimated cost of up to £1bn.

They include Japan Marine United Corporation and Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding.

Japan looks to Greece for first major defense export
Greece is modernizing its aging fleet of firefighting planes and plans to replace several dozen. The European country has expressed interest in buying the amphibious craft produced by ShinMaywa Industries.

Japan has yet to sell finished hardware since relaxing the exports ban. The country lost to France in 2016 on a bid to supply submarines to Australia, while Spain won a contested Thai air defense radar contract this spring. Negotiations to sell the US-2 to India have faltered over price.

In this week's issue of Science Translational Medicine, Zaveri and academic colleagues in the United States and Japan report that rhesus monkeys given AT-121 experienced 100-fold greater pain relief than the same dose of morphine provided. Yet the drug did not trigger respiratory depression, addictivelike behaviors, or even tolerance, where more of a compound is needed over time to produce the same desirable effects such as pain relief. AT-121 even appears to counteract addiction to standard opioids, such as oxycodone, Zaveri says. Monkeys hooked on oxycodone and trained to self-administer the drug sharply reduced further drug seeking when given AT-121. "It looks very promising," Bohn says of the new compound.
