I think that is more pertinent. Strangely the path in front of the Toyota dealership next door is cleared.

Are there any statistics of how well roads in front of car dealerships are cleared categorized by brand?

Brand being the key word in that sentence, even if you are taking the piss.

There are several of the major dealerships on that street. The Lexus one stood out as far as my journey took me this evening.

My basic point is the attitude, they cleared the entrance for cars, but didn't bother to do the path. Everyone else had made an effort as far as I could see, I'll be going up there in daylight tomorrow and will be sure to check VW, Landrover and Harley Davidson. In contrast our Hancho, Mr H, cleared about a kilometer of path along Nogawa while everyone else was still in bed.

I'm going to raise the issue of the lack of grit (in both senses) with the Shiyakusho, there is a pattern of heavy snow and hardened ice. With an aging society they are going to find a lot more elderly people having to chose between risking a broken limb or sitting at home cold and hungry.

I guess what Takechan is saying is the young Japanese are good at finding excuses not to do some hard work, and if some old lady falls over and breaks her wrist we should just carry her up the mountain and leave her.

What you say is all true.

My grandfather broke his hip in icy conditions at the age of 85, and the operation afterwards affected his brain very much due to the anaesthesia, so the last 5 years of his life were spent in less than optimal condition.

Somehow anaesthesia is pretty bad on old brains.

Also the forced inertia starts to bring on other age related conditions, and once muscle is lost it is hard for elderly people to build their strength up again.

So the Tohachi report is Harley Davidson,Toyota, Subaru & Land Rover Jaguar all top of the class, though some had help from good sunlight, VW could do better, and Lexus bottom of the class. though poor sunlight might mitigate, the fact the footpath outside their showroom gets very little sun makes it all the more important they clear it.

I realised Takechan assumed that since the snow melted in central Tokyo it must have melted everywhere, I guess he is unaware of the significant differences in temperature around the metropolis.

I had some asshat in a hiace get impatient with my slow pace through the icy stretches of road 2 nights after the snow. He tried to abruptly go around me...and ended up sliding right into the barrier on the opposite side of the street. (too bad I don't have a camera at that angle) I would have had a good laugh if not for the angles on the icy roads keeping me white knuckling it at a safe pace.

Then on the way home tonight, I see a prius rear end a parked red kei...sideways. Dumbshit postal driver parked his kei illegally, right at the end of a loooong icy patch of road...the prius was unable to change lanes, braked, and did a nice sideways slide into it. Glad I was paying attention because I'm not so sure I could have made the lane change if I waited a little longer..

For sure.

The problem in Tokyo is most of the main streets were clear..but on many side streets, like in front of my office, where the street was shaded, the snow left to it's own devices melted into really thick, uneven, ice. I've also seen plenty of people walking in the road on these ice patches...while cars are approaching. You don't need much of an imagination to see what can happen there. Whether it's private citizens or a local city effort, it's worth making an effort to clear the snow before it turns into ice.

You can alwys ski in it. In the old days, we would just pull out our cross country skis and that would be a perfectly fine means of transportation.

And then there is the Ratrac:

Maybe they could build a kei-Ratrac for J-roads Japanese roads.

Grumpy Gramps wrote:China's Space Station is not out of Control and Falling to Earth, Space Agency tries to assure Public

independent wrote:'The remaining wreckage will fall into a designated area of the sea, without endangering the surface'.

China’s space station is not out of control and people living under it aren’t in danger, a leading Chinese engineer has said amid fears it could soon slam down to Earth.

Repeated warnings have suggested that the space agency has lost control of its station and that it could plummet down to Earth. But it has told the public that it knows exactly what is going on with it.

Tiangong-1, which translates as “heavenly palace”, was launched into orbit in 2011. Since then it has been undertaking experiments, in large part as a test to have a permanent station in space by 2023.

It was supposed to be decommissioned in 2013, with a controlled destruction. That has been repeatedly delayed, however, leading to fears that it could be out of control and the Chinese space agency is simply waiting for it to fall back to Earth.

If it did so and managed to land over a populated area, the remains of the space station that don’t burn up on re-entry could cause serious damage.

hu Congpeng, a top engineer at the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, told the state-backed Science and Technology Daily newspaper that the space station was not crashing and did not pose a safety or environmental threat.

“We have been continuously monitoring Tiangong-1 and expect to allow it to fall within the first half of this year,” Mr Zhu told the newspaper.

“It will burn up on entering the atmosphere and the remaining wreckage will fall into a designated area of the sea, without endangering the surface,” he said.

**sigh of relief** So it won't rain space stations and I won't have to adjust my window blinds then. Happy days.

They were right, if they designate the South Pacific after the event.

We're right around 23C in Fukuoka, but the humidity is only 23% today.
The farmers are out plowing their fields in preparation of planting rice.
It'll be nice and sweaty here soon enough though... :glow:
Not much snow (a bit of sleet maybe) up in Sapporo according to my daughter, raining today it seems.

We were 26 today with 81% humidity. Rained later and cooled slightly, so the humidity kept climbing.

Yeah, then you'll want to get one before Marine Day, when the little hellions begin their summer vacation and prices skyrocket.

Bullshit. Climate is not weather. Your link shows average maxima, the 平年値 which they then breathlessly report on TV weather that today was x degrees above. Like when it exceeded 32 degrees, in June!, in 2010. That day was 17 degrees above the climatically average maximum for that month.

Nice wetlands, though. Worth a visit, and just a short drive away "You can see Russia* from here."

* The bits of Russia not recognised by uyoku, anyway.

In the mean time, a national disaster in slow motion is happening. Looks like there will be well over 100 deaths.

At least 66 dead, 61 missing as record rains devastate parts of Japan

Ehime is a complete mess. 20 dead, several still missing, transportation knocked out all across the prefecture. JR is not running, the highway buses have stopped. I have o find alternative transport up to Imabari from Matsuyama for tomorrow morning as the train service is still not up and running.
