Just which Japanese can demand

Postby wangta » Tue May 15, 2018 11:59 pm

you give a copy of your passport to them?
One of my mates in Osaka was told he can renew his apato but he has to give a copy of his passport. He already gave his gaijin card and he's in the frame of mind where he's getting sick of all sorts of Jp cunts demanding ID for this and that.
The gaijin card shows when his visa expires, the passport doesn't.
Does he have the right to refuse? Any debito substitutes out there who know?

They don't have any legal right to a copy but he can simply ask why and if it bothers him enough, a copy of their privacy protection policy for such documents.

Personally, landlord asking wouldn't bother me in the least. It's the uninformed hotel clerks that don't realize it's not required of residents and insist they need to make a copy of such a sensitive document and let it float around in their mountains of paperwork.

They have no right to request a copy for foreign residents of Japan. They do have this right for foreign tourists, though. Most hotels seem to know this nowadays.

The only people who can ask to see your passport are cops & immigration. End of.

Gaijin card is the legal substitute of the passport, that is its purpose.

Your friend should seek legal advice at their shiyakusho.

The landlord is breaking the law.
