FAO Taro

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Fri Jul 29, 2016 12:53 pm

Your worst nightmare virtually realized

daigo ishii + future-scape architects 'tokyo-ize' six of the world's major cities

daigo ishii + future-scape architects has envisioned six great cities as tokyo-themed urban landscapes, drawing from the rich graphic language and vibrant visual effects seen on the city’s streets. presented as part of the venice architecture biennale, ‘worldwide tokyo-lization project’ explores the idea of ‘locality’ and asks ‘what is the image of a city?’ if elements from its environment are replaced with those from an entirely different context. does it maintain its character, or does it transform into a new landscape altogether?

I would love to do the opposite.
Take a typical Japanese cityscape:
-- Remove the concrete utility poles and overhead wires.
-- Strip off all the pipes, wires, air conditioners, etc. hanging off the sides of buildings.
-- Add trees, greenery, sidewalks, and bike lanes.
-- Reduce the garish signage by 95%.
-- And, then get rid of all the jiji and babba polluting the place.

So anyone over the age (counts backwards on fingers) of 60-something? I could live with that, for a couple of decades at least.

They were doing this relatively actively right up until Tepco got distracted by more urgent matters a bit over 5 years ago.

But you'd think at least any new roads carved through the remaining green space (such as the one outside my front door) would at least be devoid of poles... Nope...

Yes, the banlieues are adorable. And much of the flavorless graffiti-marred remainder outside of Parisland and Versaillesland is either filth or inhabited by it.

Yeah, they dumped that plan real quick like, didn't they? That had such serious promise, and apparently the savings generated pay for it in a snap. :(

This seems right up your alley, Taro.

Any of you really old timers remember this?

Watch a Cursed Japanese Kleenex Ad

In 1986, Kleenex released this commercial in Japan. It's a simple, almost minimalistic premise: a woman in white and an ogre child sit on a pile of hay and enjoy their Kleenex brand tissues while the song "It's a Fine Day" by Jane & Barton plays in the background.

Almost instantly, TV stations and Kleenex corporate allegedly began receiving complaints regarding the ad. Perhaps it was its overall strangeness, perhaps it was the minor key of the song, but people were almost ubiquitously unnerved by the commercial and requested that it be taken off the air.

As mass media is wont to do, the advertisement sparked a number of urban legends. Several rumors began to circulate about the cast. One claimed the entire film crew met untimely deaths in freak accidents. Another reported that the ogre child had died immediately after filming. Still others circulated that the actress, Keiko Matsuzaka, died, was committed to a psychiatric hospital following a mental breakdown, or became pregnant with a demon baby.

Oh, I remember that Kleenex one. However, all Japanese commercials were that strange to me back then since I didn't understand any Japanese---such as this 1986 one of Rie Miyazawa unwrapping and cherishing her wooden dildo.

Oh she-e-e-e-it! I missed my true calling. :frown2:

(My rest-of-the-story: Back when mastodons roamed the plains of America, I was disqualified from the US Olympic Wrestling team for injuring too many opponents. If I had continued in wrestling, I would have been relegated to being a crappy, B-team, pro-wrestler and I most likely would have ended up spending my career as a luchador since my family owned a largish ranchero outside Monterrey Mexico.)

I was wondering about that pricking sensation.
