MtGox's Mark Karpeles served fresh arrest warrant

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Mon Aug 24, 2015 5:02 pm

Bitcoin CEO's arrest leaves trail of unanswered questions

The arrest of MtGox boss Mark Karpeles has begun to shed light on the defunct Bitcoin exchange after hundreds of millions of dollars in virtual currency vanished from its digital vaults last year.

But as details of a lengthy investigation by Japanese police trickle out, at least one crucial question remains unanswered: where is the money?

On Friday authorities issued a fresh arrest warrant for Frenchman Karpeles over claims he stole several million dollars from clients, including about $48,000 allegedly spent on a luxury canopy bed.

Karpeles, 30, who has reportedly denied the allegations, was initially taken into custody earlier this month and has been held without formal charges for three weeks, as allowed under Japanese law.

A fresh warrant resets the clock on how long police can hold him and grill the self-described computer geek over Tokyo-based MtGox's missing Bitcoins.

So far, police have accused Karpeles of manipulating data and stealing sums that amount to just a fraction of the 850,000 coins -- worth around $480 million at the time, or $387 million at current exchange rates -- that disappeared last year.

Are you making a philosophical statement? Or are you saying you're confused about how the theft happened?

MtGox's Mark Karpeles served fresh arrest warrant (August 24)

Well, it has been 23 days since his 'rearrest' on August 24. Will Buttboy Karpeles be re-rearrested today? :-D

Edit:

Japan charges Bitcoin exchange CEO with embezzlement
http://www.france24.com/en/20150911-jap ... jiji-press
TOKYO (AFP) -- Japanese prosecutors on Friday charged the head of collapsed Bitcoin exchange MtGox with embezzlement, Jiji Press news agency said, amid fraud allegations over the disappearance of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of the virtual currency.
The charges, which could not be immediately confirmed, come after France-born Mark Karpeles, 30, was taken into police custody in Tokyo last month over the affair. It was unclear if the indictment related to all or a part of the missing money.
He has been held without formal charge for six weeks, as allowed under Japanese law.
Karpeles was first taken into custody over claims he fraudulently tinkered with data and transferred funds to other firms controlled by him dozens of times between 2011 and 2013.

If you think about it, it is kind of funny.

He embezzled bits.

That are supposed to represent money.

Money that is not recognized as money under Japanese law...

Again?
Hackers Steal $59 Million In Cryptocurrency From Japanese Exchange
NPR | September 20, 20185:53 PM ET
Last week, hackers stole an estimated $59 million from a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange called Zaif, according to a statement released Thursday by the owners of the exchange.
According to Cointelegraph, the Tech Bureau Corp. said the breach occurred on September 14. The company discovered something was wrong on September 17, and realized it was a hack the following day, September 18.
Zaif lost 5,966 Bitcoins, currently valued at more than $6,000 each, as well as some Monacoin and Bitcoin Cash, the amount of which Tech Bureau is currently investigating, according to the released statement.
Tech Bureau said it will sell a majority of its shares to another financial services corporation in Japan, as reported by CCN. That sale is supposed to provide over $40 million to be used to replace the funds stolen from customers.

You have to ask which is the biggest bubble: the trade in Bitcoin; or the trade in the majority ownership of a cryptocurrency exchange with an immediate $59 million decrease in assets and with a poor security reputation which everyone will now avoid like the plague. Is that worth investing 40 million real dollars in?

It's all a big scam.

I don't understand people are falling for it.

Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpeles Sentenced for Data Manipulation in Japan
beincrypto.com | 15 March, 2019 at 9:02 EST
...
Karpeles was finally sentenced today in Japan and was cleared on all counts of embezzlement, as reported by Bloomberg. He was, however, given a two and a half year suspended sentence for data falsification, with the court’s verdict stating:
The charge of electronic record tampering is true and deserves punishment, but there’s no criminal evidence of embezzlement.
A suspended sentence means that Karpeles will not actually have to serve any time in prison unless he is found guilty of another crime within the next four years.
In 2018, the remaining funds from Mt. Gox were sold off in batches as the price of Bitcoin (BTC) began to slip in order to pay back creditors.
This sentence looks to be the final chapter in concluding the Mt. Gox saga, as it is likely that Karpeles will fall off the radar during the next few years. The whole ordeal has permanently affected and scarred the cryptocurrency market, even to this day, and will go down in history as the first major event which almost collapsed the entire cryptocurrency economy.

$32m stolen from Tokyo cryptocurrency exchange in latest hack

Just dumping it here, no idea if related to Mr Karpeles.

Come to think of it, is there anyone in the real economy still accepting Bitco(i)n?
