Elon's missed chance to massage the egos of a nation

Postby matsuki » Thu Sep 20, 2018 4:37 pm

Background:

In a live event held Monday at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, Elon Musk said Yusaku Maezawa, the billionaire founder and CEO of Japanese fashion retailer Zozo, would be the first private passenger to fly around the moon on a mission the company has planned for 2023.

"Finally, I can say, I can tell you that I choose to go to the moon," Maezawa said after joining the SpaceX CEO on stage.

Maezawa, 42, said he planned to invite six to eight artists to join him on the historic mission, which he called the "Dear Moon" project. He added that he got the idea after thinking about how seeing the moon up close might affect some of his favorite artists.

Cue the "I'm proud to be Japaneeezu because we are officially the first space tourists!"

Osaka representing Japan in competition is one thing, more power to her. Osaka representing "Japanese tennis" on the other hand  Pretending the locals would accept her as Japanese without her sports skills.... :-D

Dunno how this became a topic in this thread, but I think Osaka does act in quite a Japanese way in her behavior.

That said, I am still waiting for someone to point out on Japanese TV that she picked up her tennis skills in the.....(WAIT FOR IT)..... US!

Isn't that what WUchan was on about?

Her mannerisms are tots Japanese...helicopter mom for sure.

The J-media who is cheering her on as "Japan's first" or a "Japanese woman" seem to always leave out this part:

Her Japanese grandfather was furious when he found out that her mother was romantically involved with a black man. As a result of the interracial relationship, her mother did not have contact with her family for over ten years.

No dedicated thread for Osaka?

Interesting to see what happens when she turns 22.

Unless your son had as much spotlight on her as Naomi Osaka does, I beg to differ. Consider her very public winnings and the taxes that come with them.

Japan will not double-tax, and since she resides in the US, she won't have to pay taxes in Japan on her winnings, me-thinks.

She has to file taxes in Japan with that J-citizenship. If she paid taxes in the US and they exceed what she'd owe in Japan, yes, she won't pay taxes here in J-land...but she will have to show her US tax statements which could out her as a US citizen.

That's what I thought. Looks like our wives were breaking the law for all those years eh?

About the only shithole we are talking about here is the united States.

Matsuki has confused nationality with tax residence. Since the shithole of his own nationality attaches tax liability to nationality notwithstanding lack of residence, he is a little confused. He should have sorted those concepts out by now though, since he is cosmopolitan, and is savvy enough about residence and tax to know the difference between California and Nevada.

I don't think Naomi Osaka has residence in Japan, and by not having residence in Japan she can avoid tax liability.

Funnily enough, I heard that many better earning Americans actually thought that Trump would get rid of the FATCA/FBAR crap, so they waited for that, haha. Now their only way out of paying Uncle Sam's wall is to renounce citizenship, if they have the luxury of owning another good passport

They will probably make her choose on her next entry. It's illegal for Japanese adults to have dual citizenship.

My suggestion was more about the responsibility to file, not actual tax liability. I could be totally wrong about her being compelled to file (I'm not Japanese so...sorry if that's the case) but, as you pointed out, is something US citizens are required to do regardless of residence.

..and another American can't seem to grasp that you can have Japanese citizenship, indeed Japanese citizenship to the exclusion of any other citizenship, and still have residence outside of Japan, which frees you from liability to Japanese income tax (including liability to present documentation).

Also, she is not yet of the age where she would be required to make that choice of nationality.

How rude.... I never said they would tax her. I said they may make an example of her like they did with that lady in the diet.

If they ask, she can just say she is Japanese. They will not take away her Japanese nationality, because she was born Japanese.

And she is not a politician, so they will not attack her for it. Rather, they will prefer to look the other way. Imagine when a famous tennis star would have to give up her Japanese nationality because of Japanese laws...

How very dare you!!!! /faux indignation

If you don't want people to think that you said they would tax her, next time, take more care in what parts of other people's posts you quote to indicate what you are responding to. The part you quoted said nothing about nationality, and everything about residence and tax liability. Your response was about nationality. What else was I supposed to understand about your post?

Hat tip to Mulboyne on twitter.

Patrick Harlon has a column (Japanese language) in Newsweek looking at choice of nationality and making arguments in support of the introduction of dual nationality. He looks at the costs of abandoning a nationality, particularly the costs of abandoning US nationality. He also looks at the costs to the nation state in making it difficult to put down roots in an adopted country. The column strikes a nice balance between actual knowledge and a light, comic touch. Worth a read.

Back on topic:

https://phys.org/news/2018-09-japan-fir ... sions.html

A Japanese start-up is to send spacecraft to the moon in a deal signed with Elon Musk's SpaceX, the Tokyo-based firm said Wednesday.

Before J-news reporter starts purporting SpaceX chose this company to be the first because it's Japanese

Hakamada also told reporters the company chose SpaceX as it is "highly credible" and "capable".

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell said in a statement that the company is "proud to have been selected by ispace to launch their first lunar missions".
