I've posted here just a few times without providing a proper introduction so...

My name is Peter and I live in Seattle. I have a J-gf that I met here about 2 1/2 years ago while she was completing an advanced degree. She has since graduated and moved back to Tokyo. We have been in a long distance relationship for over a year now, but are discussing marriage now. (A few days ago I indicated that I was planning a trip to Tokyo in the next month or two to propose. Thanks for the suggestions on where to do it).

We get along great and I've visited her a few times and met her family. They seem very, very nice and open to the idea that her daughter is dating a gaijin. That's one of the main reasons I am moving forward with this relationship because I was convinced that if I'm "accepted" by her family that the rest should be fairly smooth sailing.

The plan was for us to get married and then she moves to Seattle for a few years. She wants me to consider living in Japan for a few years as well. I thought that was fair and thus have started looking into the possibility of taking a job in Tokyo for the company I currently work for in Seattle.

After reading Shinigami's post about how fucked it really is to be a gaijin in Japan, I suddenly felt all clammy. Is it really that horrible? And we are most certainly going to have kids, but if being a "hafu" is more horrible in Japan than it would be in the US then I'm pretty sure kids will be timed accordingly.

That being said, I'm hoping that one of you FGs that's gone through the immigration bullshit to get your J-wife sorted out, is there an archive that talks about the exact steps one needs to go through? Just surfing on the web and trying to figure this out has been daunting at best.

She seems to think that getting married in Japan would speed the process up more than if we went through the fiance' visa route through the US Immigration. What's the process like post 9-11? Sorry if this has been asked 90784875 times before here, too?

I'm married to a "J-wife", but got married in Australia (where I'm from) and it was soooo easy, I'd do it again... if I got divorced that is!

But I do personally know of a guy from Denver who is trying to get his J-wife (one of my students) to go through US immigration instead of him coming to Japan. Well, put it this way, I think if she goes through US Immigration, it adds about 6 months of f*ckin' about with paperwork and stuff, so if you can make it here to get married, sign documents etc, it's definately worth it.

Word of advice, moog: Do NOT listen to anything Shini says. It's all hatred and bile, the stuff that trolls like to post to annoy the hell out of others. Take it with a huge grain of salt.

I've seen many hafu kids in Japan, and no one really seems to care. I could see potential for difficulty if the kids go to a pure Japanese school, but if they go to any one of the international schools in Tokyo, there should be no problem. Many, if not most, of the kids at the international schools are of mixed backgrounds.

Also, if you need visa/immigration/marriage information, go to the US embassy website for answers.

She's right. Rezz hit the nail on the head about the shorter process. Also see this old thread for some detail I typed up about the process (plus good advice from everybody else). OTOH, I am not sure if anything changed since 9/11, but I haven't heard about any such changes.

Yes, indeed. I find it very sad that he hasn't been able to get comfortable after being here for 30 years. It is certainly possible - a lot of us are doing fine after a much shorter time. I don't know whether it's due to unlucky circumstances wherever he is, or if it's due to his personality, but I have my suspicions....

Hi, I'm a 23yr old student who's married to a Japanese woman. We live in southern california but often stay in Japan during the summer. I'm usually around the Kansai area, and I also spend time in Kyushuu near Miyazaki city. I'll try to post frequently, would be nice to know other gaijin's while I'm in Japan. I posted pix in the Nihonjin thread, check them out.

If you're lokking for interesting company, you've probably come to the right place.
Just one word of advice: If you see a gaijin walking around town (they'll be easy to spot) that doesn't appear to be a torrist; don't bother saying hi. They've probably been here long enough to adopt the don't-talk-to-strangers routine. It's such a shame.
When I first got here; I would greet everyone I meet on my way to and from work. Now I just completely ingnore thier existance.

I loooooove torture the don't-talk-to-stranger-FGs with my biggest "HOWDY!" Then I act real nerdly and ask them a bunch of touristy questions. Finally when they sniff with their nose in the air, they'll ask me how long I've been here.

Why would you ever do that? Summers in Japan are hell on earth... I take the first flight back in July and head to Santa Cruz, where the water is cool, the food tasty, and I don't sweat just standing around. 8)

I'd love to see that !

Maybe we should get RobPongi with a hidden camera and then let the two of you loose about town. Whatever happens, I'm sure you could make a funny video out of it. Maybe it'll become a Japanese TV show pilot - the Taro & Pongi Show

Funny you should mention that. Some Taro/Pongi action was "caught on tape" just last week.

Stay tuned for details. :)

Hi FG's

Postby fast_dave » Sun Feb 08, 2004 11:25 pm

Hello All,

I've been lurking this site for a year now, and finally took the plunge and registered.

I'm an Ameican that's married to a Swede, and I'm currenlty living in Sweden. Many of the culture shocks (foods, attitudes, customs) that you experience in Japan are similar to the ones I experience living in Sweden. I enjoy reading the posts on this site as well as Lets Japan. Someday I hope to make it over to Japan...

Anyways, I just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi!

All the best,

I, also, have been lurking here for a month or two.

I am in college in the states and am currently applying for a study abroad program (sponsored by my college) in Japan. I will proably be going to Yamaguchi Prefectoral University for one semester this fall, and doing a homestay for those 2-3 months.

Hi All,

I have been reading ur posts and a few Jap-ogs lately, been quite interesting as I am planning to go back to Japan. Most of the stuff you guys talk about is pretty funny, and so nazakashi.. if thats the right word?

I did exchange 4 years ago when i was 16 for 10 months, and worked as a translator for a Japanese car manufacture in Australia for a while. So my Jap is ok... I think.

The company was pretty strict - they screwed there own employees {japanese nationals} big time. So I moved on...

I've been running my own company -part time - importing stuff from Japan for 1.5 years, and just merged (well actually created a new company), this week with another company that is doing RAWS compliances in Australia, which will allow me to move into full time!

Therefore I hope to be going there in the VERY near future to do some scouting for us :P ! (its like 4 years hisashiburi for seeing all my tomos!!)

Well Keep on posting as there is nothing else to do when I am working! :P

(I work for a mining company COLOURING IN pictures - NO JOKE)

Cheers

Didn't know that ducks were sea faring creatures. If that's a picture of the muttonbird seasonal migration, then yes, global weather changes are indeed taking care of that.

Hi, Im Frost, I'm 24 years old and I live in Chicago. I'm new and I have been not sober for 6 years now
Just found the site like 2 days ago while checking out robpongi.com and can't wait to read more....True I don't live in Japan, or have ever been there, but it has been a dream of mine for quite some time. There is about a 65% chance I will be living in Taiwan with my girlfriend in the next year, so there is a better chance of me visiting then. So..yeah..um..Hi.

P.S. When do I start getting beer bottles under my name?
