Twilight Samurai for Foreign Film Oscar

Postby Molokidan » Wed Jan 28, 2004 2:53 pm

Anyone ever see this movie? It came out about one and a half years ago, but it's being nominated for "Best Foreign Film" in the recent oscars. Says it's a samurai movie that focuses more on story than slaying. . .anyone seen it? Good? Bad? Lukewarm?

*Micro Spoilers ahead*

I saw it. It's good and not a surprise to see it in the oscar since it's an award winning kind of movie. May be too much for me actually.
Anyway, the scene between Seibei and the old crazy samurai is really well acted and well directed, without it the movie would be much less interesting, in fact i was begining to fall asleep until this scene came out. The swordfights sequences are great, totally unspectacular, you can see the fear coming out Seibei's eyes, that's very impressive.
The other thing that bugs is that it could have been a strong critic of the japan's feudal system but in the end it doesn't go very far.

I had to see it in Japanese and I had a hard time understanding parts. As Ptyx wisely said it didn't hit on Japan's feudal system as much as it should have. Most likely that was because the film was about "modern" Japan as much as it was about feudal Japan. :?

A very good film with a very strong emphasis on the story and underlying relationships. The fight scenes are few and far between and completely integral to the story.

and yeah the scene with the talk/fight between seibei and the crazy old samurai was extremely well done.

this was actually one of the inflight movies on all four overseas flights ive taken this year
