It was the use of Mario that did it for me.

I still can't believe how many of the locals are cheerily touting the Olympics as some kind of financial savior.

I didn't even bother clicking the link. Two seconds in I see that it is Mr TORTURED DELIVERY.

Did you really experience thirteen whole minutes of him?

Evaporative cooling works a treat in Phoenix, in Tokyo...not so much.

Tokyo tests water sprinklers to combat heat at 2020 Olympics
The Tokyo government tested sprinklers on the capital's street on Monday to see how effective spraying water is in countering scorching heat expected during the 2020 summer Olympics it will host.

The experiment, conducted on a pedestrian walkway along a road where competitive walking will be held during the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, showed sprinkling water would keep temperatures on the street surface up to around 5 C cooler than the surrounding air temperature.

Heat has been a major concern for the games in Japan, where the temperature soared to a record high 41.1 C in July near Tokyo. The nation has already seen over 130 people die and 71,000 others taken to hospitals due to heatstroke or heat exhaustion between April 30 and Aug. 5.

The Tokyo metropolitan government tested hoses with holes used for farming in three different settings -- using sprinklers from 4 a.m., 7 a.m. and not using them at all.

Starting at 4 a.m. created some areas where the surface temperature was about 5 C lower than the air temperature, while other wetted locations also recorded temperatures between 27 C and 29 C even when the air temperature went over 30 C.

In areas where no water was sprinkled, the surface temperature eclipsed 30 C.

As it was cloudy when the experiment was conducted, a Tokyo official in charge of the experiment said, the results could be different if the weather is sunny.

Tokyo already plans to introduce mist showers and special pavements to reduce the road surface temperatures.

Russell, prepare to be edumacated.

The previous Tokyo Olympics were held in mid October.

If these games were to be held in the same period, that would show that we haven't progressed since 1964. We can't allow people to think that!

The date had to be changed for the XII Olympiad in Tokyo, too. Things were getting a little hot then, too.

The serious answer probably has a lot to do with IOC and Japanese bureaucracy. While it is probably not impossible to change the dates, it is probably considered that the burden of rescheduling is greater than the burden of not rescheduling.

I find it quite amazing that the country/city hosting the Olympics does not get to choose the time to host it, but the broadcaster that pays the most. Talk about screwed up priorities! Hell even the world cup with FIFA and all its corruptness, decided to change the dates in Qatar so the players and fans wouldn't be dropping like flies!

Sapporo set to give up bid for 2026 Winter Olympics
The Japan Times | Sept. 13, 2018
SAPPORO ---
Sapporo intends to tell the International Olympic Committee early next week that it plans to give up bidding for the Winter Olympics in 2026, a source familiar with the matter said Thursday, with the city now aiming to stage the games in 2030...
...
The capital of Hokkaido had been planning to make its final decision on withdrawal from the 2026 bid after the dialogue stage ends this fall. But it made up its mind earlier apparently due to damage from the Sept. 6 magnitude 6.7 quake that killed 41 people and triggered a massive power outage.

Tokyo Olympics organizers offer to pay volunteers 125 yen (US$1.13) an hour, critics unimpressed

First came concerns over the lofty credentials the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee was looking for in volunteers, but recently the issue critics are most vocal about is the drain on potential volunteers’ time and finances. In hopes of encouraging students to volunteer, proposals have been made such as shifting exam periods so as not to overlap with the Games or awarding course credits for volunteer activities. And now the Organizing Committee is adding a bit of monetary incentive too, as on September 18 it approved a plan to pay volunteers a flat per-day amount.
Volunteers will be given 1,000 yen (US$9) per day, provided they work at least an eight-hour shift (which includes breaks and stand-by periods). However, this isn’t a salary for services rendered. The payment is intended as compensation to cover volunteers’ transportation expenses unimpressed/]...more...

Board of Audit: Spending balloons for 2020 Games
NHK News | Oct. 4, 2018
Japan's Board of Audit says the government has already spent more than 5 times the original estimate on projects related to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.
Board officials said on Thursday that state spending has topped 800 billion yen, or about 7 billion dollars. That compares with the estimated cost of 1.3 billion dollars.

Over 30,000 complete applications to be 2020 Tokyo Games volunteers

Over 30,000 people have completed applications to become volunteers for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics in the 10 days since recruitment started late last month, the organizer said.

As of 10 a.m. Friday, the number of applicants for games volunteers stood at 61,826, with 31,982 having finished the necessary procedures, according to the organizing committee of the Tokyo Games.

The committee is hoping to secure about 80,000 volunteers through online recruitment by early December.

“We still have plenty of time, about two months away from the deadline. I’d say it’s going well so far,” Toshiro Muto, director-general of the organizing committee, said of the campaign, which started on Sept. 26.

He said the applicants have been almost equally divided between men and women across all age groups, including individuals in their 70s.

Besides those applicants, 3,426 have already applied to be so-called city volunteers recruited by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

The Tokyo government is trying to secure 30,000 who will provide transport and sightseeing information for visitors to the 2020 Summer Games.

In comparison, about 240,000 volunteers registered for the 2012 London Games, according to the committee.

Asked about complaints that the registration website is not easy to use, Muto said the committee has no plans to modify the system but is working to improve its manual for users.

I dunno, while it's typical volunteers will get exploited while cunts and whores of both genders of politicians get their undeserved salaries, kickbacks and gold passes for them and their similarly parasitical relatives, since when do real wages get paid in Japan for many who are employed?

In Oz you'll get paid more per hour for shelf stacking, taking a fucking cup or glass filled with something to a table and not even making it necessarily than you get for teaching English with a degree or more on your resume.

Tokyo 2020 Games: Japan Olympics chief Tsunekazu Takeda quits
BBC | 19 March 2019
The head of Japan's Olympic Committee (JOC) is stepping down over corruption allegations relating to the awarding of the 2020 Games to Tokyo.
Tsunekazu Takeda is being investigated by French prosecutors who are looking into claims a 2m Euro (£1.7m) bribe was paid to secure Tokyo's winning bid.
Tokyo was awarded the Games in 2013, beating Madrid and Istanbul.
"I don't believe I've done anything illegal," Takeda said as he announced he would not seek re-election.
"It pains me to have created such a fuss, but I believe it is my responsibility to serve out the rest of my term," he added.

We'll all be losers in 2020, anti-Olympic activists say
---Tokyo Olympics to benefit a few at expense of many, anti-games activists say---
The Japan Times | July 23, 2019
Activists opposed to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games say the events will hurt individuals and businesses through high costs and disruption, and will provide only fleeting gains for a small number of people in the political, economic and media elite.
The anti-games organizations that spoke to reporters at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan Tuesday include Hangorin no kai, a Japan-based activist group, and NOlympics LA, a coalition of over 25 organizations in California opposed to the Olympic Games.

NOlympics LA

:keyboardcoffee: WTF?

1932 LA Olympics 1 million profit.

1984 LA Olympics made a $250 million profit, the first Summer Olympics since 1932 to do so. (also LA, see above)

2028 - The bid was praised by the IOC for using a record-breaking number of existing and temporary facilities and relying on corporate money.

I can get behind this?

Japan's handling...well....not so much.

1964 Tokyo - $1,926,000,000 Final costs...no data for revenue generated

1998 Nagano - The full cost of the Nagano Olympics is unknown, due to Nagano Olympic Bid Committee vice-secretary general Sumikazu Yamaguchi ordering accounting documents burned :cool2: Cause if there are no documents, it never happened? It cost taxpayers 10 billion USD and there was a net loss.

2020 Tokyo - Original budget is 3.67 billion USD - 2018 report stated the total cost of the venues could exceed US$25 billion. Abe's "死ね" future?
