Yes, we're finally making the move. Our parent company will retain ownership of half our stock, but we'll have our own books, own costs, own profits, etc...

Rie just got promoted to fuku-shacho (although she claims to be the chairman of our board of directors, meaning I have to serve her her tea and coffee).

Wow congratulations. Thats excellent. I have a question thats doubtless quite common here, but I would appreciate if you could humor me anyway.

How difficult is it to get a job as an ESL teacher in Tokyo? Does being a former rotary exchange student to Japan help at all?
Conversely, how difficult is it to get a job as an ESL teacher in other regions of japan such as Kyoto, Osaka, and whatnot. As well as rural areas.

I would appreciate any info, anecdotes, warnings, etc

"e-Commerce Analyst" is what it says on my business card. I think it should say "legacy applications liferaft".

Do we all work in computers? Well I 'aint hanging around with a bunch o' geeks anymore then! :eeh:

My personally-reprinted meishi of Maybe-the-Largest-Inc used to say, "Software Archaeologist" and "Profesional Alien". Yesterday, I was jumpstarting some mega-funky proprietary SGML software with a new-out-the-box G4 Mac running OS 9.2 with two --count 'em--- 2 cranky anti-copy dongles and a 1985-ish dot-matrix Imagewriter.

Of the top 50 posters here on the FG Forum, its split about 60/40 between profesional geeks and English teachers with a smattering of Suits slumming. But don't worry, you'll fit in... we're all F'ed.

To make things easy, you'll need a BS or BA degree... in any subject, speak English fluently, and the more stereotypical white you look, the easier it will be to find work.

When I first came to Japan three years ago, my then future father-in-law asked his daughter if I wasn't Mexican (I'm from California) because I didn't have blonde hair. Granted, my mother's side of the family has French and Native American heritage, but some people confuse Baywatch with real life. ;)

Too funny! Too true!

I'm currently juggling two full-time jobs, though one of them has become so automated it only takes about 3 hrs a week (but I still get the F.T. salary).

1. Webmaster / Writer -> http://www.japanupdate.com
2. English Teacher -> two elementary schools.

But I'm ditching #2 at the end of March and picking up a job as a programmer at a small little ISP on Okinawa. No more kids!

Architect here for a big software company.

Currently focused on Small and Medium sized businesses and emerging markets for product validation programs. Rather than having a few token foreign customers validating the localized versions our products, we are actually extending my team to have fulltime presences in Europe and Asia. I will be building the Asian team over the next 18 months and will then be in Tokyo for about 2 years, maybe more. Though I'm sure my J-gf would like to see us just stay in Tokyo. What's worse - moving to Japan to later realize you're fucked or to realize you'll soon be fucked because you're moving there?

So yeah, I fall under the 'computer job' category.

FG Job

Postby Mini_B » Sat Jan 31, 2004 2:56 pm

Import / Export - buying here with a really strong YEN and selling in the States for a realy weak US Dollar. Should be the other way around. Electronics. Yep, you guessed it.

Partime - J-Pimp - gotta keep them J-Hoes in check. Hence...the jerry curl.

Does really intelligent Bum count as a job?
J/K
I'm actually an Intelligence Specialist for the US gov.
Hopefully when my contract is up I'll be able to start my own buisness here. The papaerwork for a foriegner starting a buisness here in Japan is quite irritating, though.
