How well are you guys managing? Things have started to get a bit worrisome in my part of the world(Birmingham, Alabama).School closings, public facilities, bars, restaurants closing and only doing deliveries or carry out orders. Gatherings of 50 or more people are being discouraged.

Masks, latex gloves, hand sanitizer? One case of N95 Face Masks with activated charcoal for my auto body and spray painting hobby, plenty of painter gloves, and I could start a batch of corn mash for more hooch/hand sanitizer.

I don't know about you but I sure as hell won't be riding any trains or doing the shoganai mambo in downtown anytime soon. All my trade shows/meetings are cancelled and I am working mostly at home...no restrictions needed to take some preventative measures but TIJ, some of my friends are being forced to work in crowded offices during this....maybe the lack of restrictions will keep this burning all the way to the Olympics.

I tend to a view that it is a combination of factors one of which is the fact that Japanese people don't mess around when they are convinced something is for the good of everyone. They just do it. I think perhaps that has happened with hand washing/gel applying/alcohol wipe wiping and it has worked. Apparently admissions for normal winter flu have been way down too.

He ASKED for a COVID-19 test three days ago and was scheduled for testing this afternoon (March 19). He died last night in the ambulance that he called for around 2am. The bummer was the ambulance drivers weren't trained (or licensed) to intubate him on route to the hospital. If I was there, I could have trached (tracheostomy) him with a pocket knife and BIC pen barrel as I have done in emergencies before ( I'm a certified EMT in the US).

My brother-in-law died because the "System" was dragging their heels on testing because of the fucking Olympics and PM Abe wanted to keep the COVID-19 numbers low.

Earlier today the total number of confirmed cases in Japan was shown as 986. A little while ago this evening it was shown as 923. That is at least the second time they have made a large revision lowering the numbers in the past several days. Not active vs. recovered cases. Total-to-date.

The government in Ehime has been pretty complacent about the Chinavirus and I sure that there are a hell of a lot more then the 3 confirmed cases considering that at least one of the cases has no links to travel or any other cluster. But this lack of testing not just here but everywhere is baffling to me as it seems to be the most important thing to do if you are really attempting to contain it.

Obviously, my brother-in-law's death could just be one-of-those-things: Cause of death was heart attack. He was super robust 55 year old who was just running a minor fever and working hard in the fields the day he died. The shortness of breath is a prime symptom of the start of a heart attack. Since no Covid-19 testing was done, he'll just be a heart attack statistic.

I am stuck here in Tokyo convalescing with a poorly healed broken leg (for the past year) so I am rather safe from exposure to WuFlu...until now since everyone else in the family runs the rare chance of being exposed to it at the funeral.

It's the whole saving face mentality (in this case, the Olympics has underscored the drive to project Tokyo as a safe destination) that we see in many collectivist Asian countries. Rather than be transparent and admit there is a problem so it can be dealt with, it gets ignored, blame placed elsewhere, etc. Japan is definitely much better than China about these things nowadays but the current level of response and lack of testing is a big risk. Maybe it dissipates quickly, doesn't spread too much, and the Olympics go on without issue...or maybe the spread is already much much larger than we know and we're in for a terrible Italy-style overload.
