Dogs????

Postby Bucky » Wed Apr 29, 2020 3:16 am

My son who lives in Naka Meguro thinks it time to consider getting a dog. He has his own house so no problem with a landlord.

The animal rescue place he inquired with said they would not place a dog with a family that has any children under the age of 5 or something. (He has a 2-year-old.)

The pet stores are selling puppy-mill "pure" breds for some ungodly prices of ¥400K or more. Any suggestions for finding a dog?

He is looking for DOG, not an ankle-biter. Something like a lab or golden retriever.

LOL, just posted on another FG-related forum that my female Sheltie is about to pop out 3 and it's highly likely one will be available. (popping out this week so probably available in 2-3 months) Not an ankle-biter but half the weight/size of lab or golden retriever....11~12kg, but with same level of high intelligence, easily trained, family friendly, and a dog that acts like a dog. (go running with, play frisbee with , etc.) I'm obviously biased but even if I didn't have one available, I don't think you can go wrong with a sheltie. No wallet raping and my apt is no puppy mill but the pups are legit champion lineage pure breds with proper paperwork. If they're anything like the previous litter with the same stud, the coloring should be pretty wild.

I think I've met that slut the mother.

Intelligent breeds like that need something to do: exercise and engagement, otherwise their intelligence + frustration = very naughty and destructive dog. There is a very real exercise commitment involved.

A big dog and a small child can be a recipe for disaster, mainly if the dog is new to the family amd has no experience with screaming toddlers (sorry :)). Same if the dog is a puppy of a larger breed, they don't know, how much power they have and are very excitable, anything can happen. I kind of agree with that shelter.

But you're free to try another shelter... Maybe try to get an older dog > 3 years, maybe a farm breed like a Berner rather than a hunter like a lab; they are generally known to be good with little children, but there's no guarantee.

Ma bitch!

Yes, what Wags says. Mental & Physical stimulation. Training is easy/fun but you need to walk them daily. I usually bring a ball or frisbee and if one of the parks is empty, let them burn off the calories on their own. My 1yo pup has limitless energy.

Well, he bought a beagle puppy at pet store. Doh!

We will see how it works out. He has his sister near by and she has raised 10 guide dog puppies for the blind, so she has a lot of experience. Hopefully she can be a good resource.

Couldn't he have gotten a 'failed' or 'retired' guide dog through his sister's connection?

I'm not sure what puppies go for back home, I know a lot of people buy them from sites like Craigs List or Kijiji in Canada. But here they will rip you a new one for a damn puppy mill dog. Then there are the extra costs of shots and other necessities. My old student bought a French bulldog and it set him back almost Y600 000! Insanity

Heartworm prophylaxis is excruciatingly expensive. Huge hole in my pocket every year, when I had to buy that for my then 3 dogs.

He bought Snoopy!! Beagles are cute and kid friendly but they are fairly well known as difficult dogs to train. Breed intelligence ranking classes them as "least effective working dogs, who may learn a new trick after more than 100 repetitions and obey around 30 percent of the time." Seen plenty that were really good but it's a lot of work.

Many online shops are selling it online and ship worldwide now. The price in Japan is just

Both my cousins have "failed" labs from these programs. They are both amazing.

Yikes!
But NHK story left out the important information: Did the traffic light collapse during a Green Light or a Blue Light (青信号)?
