Not at all. In a bad influenza season we see spikes similar to what this covid season had. But the news media and governments don't breathlessly report each and every death that occurs in someone who had the flu, and they don't shut down entire countries and then move the goalposts every time they are proved wrong.

Well it's the 14th June and I'm glad to say that my prediction, a month ago, of mass infections appearing in Japan through the death stats, have not appeared. I am happily wrong and others (Wage et al) seem to have been right, and that Japan is clearly doing something correct. However, after 25 years here, I'm still deadly suspicious that Japan has been playing with the stats.

Whatever the reason, it's still yet to be determined...and I wouldn't be so quick to give credit to Abe except for the fact that he didn't overreact with real lockdowns. (the pseudo lockdown made life shit for many people) The Abenomask debacle was simply an embarrassingly shit level gesture and massive waste of money. I know many who still haven't received them. What good are they now? What is clear is the precautions needed, weren't nearly as stringent as suggested by how the outbreaks exploded elsewhere. The Yamanote line should have been the loop of death and Tokyo the new epicenter of the world. That potential wasn't realized...hopefully we are able to figure out why, and use that to stomp out SARS 3.0 when the CCP releases that one on the world.
