Managed to dodge the worst of it round here - again. There was some quite serious and localised flooding though.

Seems to have passed over the Musashino Plain, leaving the local river drainage channel on the verge of bursting its banks (which it's never done before in all the time I've lived here) and a sudden alert on my mobile which I managed to swipe away in an attempt to silence it due to its child-wakening loudness but then the kuyakusho chipped in with a garbled message about taking immediate steps to evacuate, an invitation which we declined.

Bad news. I really hope that those drainage channel banks are high enough. Flooding is horrible.

Seems to have susbided with minor spillage. Not that it would affect Chez Yanpa, which is located on the second-highest area in the 23ku and would need the kind of flood involving an old guy with a big wooden boat full of pairs of animals. Lots of flooding elsewhere, particularly north of Tokyo, by the looks of it.

Very good. By some strange co-incidence we are about 23 meters above sea as well. Have to feel for people who are flooded though.

The body of water I live by was up 2m or so. Doggie walking path has become a swimming path and there have been warnings of some sort of diseases on the raise in the prefecture from infected mouse feces (mice fleeing the banks to higher ground to spread their poo?)

Had five inches of rain in an hour this morning. Six and a half over three hours. Wild times indeed.

.....and now it's past time to clean out ye ol airkon. The heat is here! I wonder how this will affect za shingatarona...many experts say not at all, others say it means it won't survive as long on the now heated objects we tend to touch.

Friggin wild wind here. Lots of tree damage, and I fear all of my tomatoes, cucumbers, and other veggies will all be toast by the time this is over. Fuck I hate the wind!

What is the average life of aircon units here? One of 12 years just crapped out. Need to repair or replace stat.

Depends on what's broken, really. But if it's a little residential split box, after 12 years it has pretty much seen it all and has zero value left. OTOH I have seen boxes older than 20 years still running.

New A/C's use quite a bit less energy than old ones, so in the long run it might be economical to replace it anyway.

Bigger industrial units should run longer (hopefully).

12 years old, I wouldn't hesitate to replace with a more efficient model that has plasmacluster or other purifying features.

In my experience about 10 years.

Just replaced one myself actually and it was only 9 years old. :(

Just changed one at 13 years. It was still working, kind of, but was not really doing the job properly any longer. It had done well really because it was in the LDK and working a lot of hours every day during the summer doing cooling and also doing quite a lot of heating in the first bit of winter. Similar age machine in the bedroom is still working fine, touch wood.
