The PLAGUE Olympics unfunded

Postby Taro Toporific » Tue Nov 03, 2020 9:27 pm

Just fucking cancel the plague Olympics!

Exhausted emergency fund may force Tokyo into debt and deep cuts
The Japan Times | Oct 30, 2020
Since the onset of the novel coronavirus, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has spent more than 90% of its ¥934.5 billion contingency fund on countermeasures intended to safeguard the capital’s economy and keep the virus at bay.
While the money has served its intended purpose, it’s unclear how long it will take to rebuild the fund, much less whether the capital can afford to maintain virus countermeasures if and when another wave of COVID-19 strikes...
...By falling into debt and re-appropriating existing funds, the capital risks financial destabilization and the loss of its ability to respond to natural disasters or continue to shoulder the growing cost of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Moar!

I saw the stadium for the first time recently....all that exposed wood seems like a really really bad idea in a country with as much rain and humidity a Japan. Best case scenario, it was all dried and properly coated...and it will need recoating for the life of the structure.

I built several passive solar townhouses in Colorado in 1976⁓7 with redwood siding and Thompson's Waterseal©.

The townhouses' redwood siding had to re-coated two or three times since then even though the instructions clearly said that the Waterseal© was, "good for 40 years† ," grrrrr.

† It turns out that Thompson's Waterseal© is just 90% linseed oil, 9+% acetone, and tiny amount of wood stain coloring No. 5.

Yeah, all those things are pretty easy to make at home. The antifungal/antibug stuff I use goes for insane prices yet you can make the same stuff for 1/20th of the cost at home by mixing/heating.

Redwood would have been less concerning but isn't the wood they used some sort of imported fancy stuff that caused outrage over sustainability.

[edit] Here is what I was referring to but seems like maybe the endangered rainforest wood was only used for the concrete molds?

I think it's mostly made of Karmatsu and Sugi.
