Haha, yeah yeah. America to protect Europe; I believe it, when I see it, they have lost every war since WWII, even the cold war IMO. And they won WWII only because of the Russkies doing the dirty work in the trenches, while the Americans were sunbathing in Pearl Harbor and on Bikini; and once the work was done, the Yanks came in with the marching bands to cherry pick. If I wanted to win a war, I'd go with Russian hard asses rather than with American couch potatoes, but that's just me. (Yes, I know, I am exaggerating, but this is the Internet )

IMO, NATO would be better off without the Yanks but including the Russkies. This is more cultural than anything else. The anglo-saxons mostly work with ferocious pressure, sanctions, threats etc. whereas Europe more often seeks dialog, horse trading and nepotism; softer, but not less corrupt. We Gauls, Alemanns, Teutons etc. just have more in common with the Russkies than we think.

I also don't think, we should jump on the "supreme white man shall show yellow monkey untermensch how to behave" bandwagon. Europe has too many fingers in the Chinese and Russian economy pots to not stay friendly with them. And the last time, Europe has tried it, it didn't end well; no need to rinse and repeat.

You might be right about having more in common but before people trust Russia too far they might want to consider their recent record. Not many people in Poland or Czechsia or Slovakia or any of those states who had the pleasure of Russian rule are too convinced they are a better deal than the anglo-saxons. The anglo saxons might be quite direct and want to station their military on your land but if you ask them to go, then their record (more or less in modern times) is that they will go without a fight. You might ask the Ukrainians if that is the case in Crimea.

The reason the US wanted to station huge numbers of weapons and troops in europe was that they felt that Russia was a global threat to American interests, capitalism and freedom etc. It was seen as an existential battle. Nowadays, the battle over communism is pretty much won so Russia is seen more as just another capitalist state. In fact DT seemed to think Russia was a friendlier state that the EU states and was much maligned. Hence, he rightly saw no reason for the US to be involved in containing their power in europe.

The new president might not take the same view. He might consider capitalist Russia to be as unfriendly and opposed to US interests as communist (ha!) China. In that case, the US military presence in both Asia and Europe will continue. There might be some friction over contributions but it will continue.

True that, WS! The Poles were very enthusiastic about the Americans placing their missiles in their country recently. And they and the other former Warsaw Pact states plus the Baltics are still badly burnt from former Soviet tyranny, while doing considerably better then the current CIS states in most every aspect of live.

OTOH Russia is the largest country in the world and it has ample resources. It can't be brought down by sanctions. Sanctions would be like Jusco refuses to sell you eggs, while you have your own egg-laying chickens right in your backyard. If you were Putin, you'd say "yes, it's really hard for us now" and smile. And Russia isn't the Soviet Union, a fact that many of the countries mentioned above and much of the West seem to have forgotten. Mainly the Western militaries seem to be eager to keep the bogey of a new cold war alive, in order to get more defense budget and also a credible "enemy". How to get rid of your enemies? Make them your friends. Not what western militaries want to hear

OTOH Putin is highly intelligent and knows how to use his advantage without much of saber rattling. The only question is: Who comes after him. And that's where I am sceptical, too. So IMO we should use the window of time that we have to make the most out of a relatively calm Russia, instead of wasting money and energy clenching our fists and constantly farting in Russia's general direction. Russia can lean back and relax, while the West wastes a lot of its economic power for military nonsense. All Putin has to say is "Oh, by the way, we have new missiles" and a trillion dollars or three go down the drain in the West, weakening its economic power. Of course Putin uses this to his advantage. A weaker West means a stronger Russia. And if he can get that so cheaply, why wouldn't he.

Just my thoughts, I could be completely wrong on all aspects of this.

...or don't trust either. Both have been leet haxxoring the US (and many other countries) for years now so I wouldn't consider either country to have good intentions. OTOH, I do think the Russians are more likely to be reasonable when it comes to finding a path to mutual cooperation and a less corrupt governance.

Yeah, well thankfully DT is on his way out now so a more rational and balanced foreign policy can start to take shape again in the US. Personally, I wouldn't want to trust that nice Mr Putin very far and I can't help but feel there is something fundamentally uncivilised about the way the Russian rulers behave. Ditto China of course. We have to get on with them and China has great manufacturing skills and work ethic that we have all benefited from but we need to maintain our guard. And that costs money and some countries are not pulling their weight.
