Can The Honda NSX Make A Comeback?

Image

There once was a time when Japanese automakers were fearless in their pursuit of pushing the limits of raw, gas-guzzling engineering. Nowadays, engineers are pressed to get the most out of the fewest parts, and make sure to paint them with a nice coat of “green”.

Although there have been some great engineering highlights coming out of Japan recently, there are few that can hold a candle to what is perhaps the most innovative supercar-eater Japan has ever produced, the Honda NSX.

Born out of the F1 racing team’s development circle, the NSX (New Sportscar eXperimental) first came into existence via a collaboration with the Italian design group Pininfarina that was dubbed the HP-X (Honda Pininfarina – Experimental).

The original NSX is still extremely popular, and you can't even buy a used one in good shape for less than about 7 million yen.

The new upcoming model ... well, they seem to be having a few minor problems. The prototype burned up (literally) at the Nurburgring a couple of months ago. It just caught fire during a lap and kept burning until it was totalled, apparently.

Still, if I had the 15 million yen it'll cost burning a hole in my pocket (<- see what I did there?), I'd be tempted. Unfortunately I don't, so I won't. I really like the way the concept looks though.

<!_ridiculous brag warning>

I used to drive the movie star, 名取裕子_Natori Yuko's NSX.

Why?

Natori-chan was a "paper driver" and the NSX was far more than she could handle (even though 95% of the 1st-gen NSXs had automatic transmissions.

Problem: NSXs have a side-by-side bathtub design for its unibody "frame". If a girl in a skirt wants to sit in either of the driver's or passenger's seats, she will have to lift up her leg and show off the color of her panties (Yuko-chan's were always pink).
