Japan could be nearly destroyed by a volcanic eruption over the next century that would put nearly all of its population of 127 million people at risk, a new study says.
“It is not an overstatement to say that a colossal volcanic eruption would leave Japan extinct as a country,” Kobe University earth sciences professor Yoshiyuki Tatsumi and associate professor Keiko Suzuki said in a study publicly released on Wednesday.

One of the biggest problems for the study of geology in this country is that earthquakes and volcanos seem to can under the juridiction of the meteorological agency which LOVES predicting things. So instead of spending their time and money doing decent mapping they waste both time and effort making absolutely pointless predictions. While they talk about the Kikai Caldera eruption in the past they don't mention which volcano they seem to think is due to blow.

Should something like the Akahoya eruptionoccurred again there would be a hell of a lot of destruction in southern Kyushu, lots of ash everywhere else, although the death toll worldwide due to starvation due to lack of sunlight would be the scary thing.
