China has the ability to fly to Mars, they are not inept at all; the "cheap junk" reputation nowadays mainly comes from the western importers. They order things and parts and spec only the price. No problem, China can deliver; unsuitable materials, low build quality, high tolerances, no QC, and bam, there's your cheap part that lasts for five minutes on a good day.

OTOH if you order good parts to higher specs, China can defo deliver as well, but then it costs more, China is no charity; the western importers' don't want that, their bottom line is all they care about, fuck the end user.

With this underdog reputation, China has a big advantage. It can all of the sudden throw excellent stuff on the market and the GMs, Fords, and Benzes of the world won't know what hit them.

I import precision sensors we manufacture in China. High quality materials, quality manufacturing...but the employee turnover is the biggest issue and it often results in the "terribly hilarious" problems. You're laying blame on the "western importers" but in my experience, the problem often lies locally in China. Once price and agreement set, there is outsourcing of everything imaginable just to save 3yen here and there. Next thing you know, knock offs of your product start showing up and disrupting your market.

There is a load of talent in China but as you say, it's not cheap....and it's not trustworthy.

Definitely the case. Worth pointing out the CCP doesn't allow foreign ownership in China (except Tesla, somehow they got an exception) you are always at the mercy of the state officials and whoever locally owns the factory for you. Not exactly fair rules but while that was tolerable in the past, with more industrialization and higher wages, comes higher worker turnover, higher costs, and more competition. We're nearing a tipping point where manufacturing may make more sense elsewhere. I'm already there, based upon all the issues I've seen/experienced, all about Thailand for me and while there still may be an occasional hiccup, they take responsibility...but then the more companies that get burned, the more that shift will happen.
