Well, one thing about this Forum is that there is some really good stuff in here. After reading through the thread, I realized that when I visit my out-laws in Tokyo this summer we should not be staying at their house, and instead stay at a hotel. There is a young married couple there and with us being three people I thought we should stay in a hotel especially since we will be there for two weeks.

Even though I did not inoitiate this thread, thanks for the info.

Hey BB, where you been? How'd this all turn out? Or did your wife freak out and kill you?

Yep.
The parents have visited twice.
The 80 year old gramma once.
The next guest from abroad will stay in a hotel, blood ties be damned.
My J-inlaws were the epitomy of kewlness but it wadnt enough.
Have a large guest room but it wadnt enough.
Spent a kings-ransom for "edible" food, but it wadnt enough.
The Dad and Mom claimed to be "international", "enlightened", "culturally open". What a crock of shit. After about a week I was dreaming of the day, nay the hour when I could push them out through the Narita departure gate and get back to privacy with Mrs. Big and swillin in peace.

Well to summarize what happened.

The guest wound up staying longer.. on an extended ticket, that pissed off the wife royally so I told the guest that because of "finances" it would be hard for them to stay, as my wife suggested we use that excuse. Well that really pissed off the guest, and a fight broke out (verbal, not physical). The guest asked to leave immediately... that they realized and felt so stupid for not picking up on the subtle hints earlier.. blah blah blah.. So, the wife stepped in and invited the guest to stay for a while longer (at this point I almost shit my pants, how could she invite the guest to stay longer when she was bad-mouthing them in the other room not more than 20 minutes before) LOL

Well, it turns out that the extended stay wasn't so bad. I think my wife actually grew a little from the experience. The guest has since returned and life is back to normal. The wife's stress levels are within parameters, and the guest has a nice trip to talk about for a few months.

Needless to say, as Big Boy says, next time, it'll be a hotel stay.. ;)

Oh and we had to buy a couch, a messaging recyliner (guest had back problems from 1 day of sleeping on a futon), a larger washing machine and dryer... etc... just for this guest LOL as our current setup is made for 2, when we added a third it just wasn't going to work out. And another thing, your bills will nearly triple too. See the guest was used to the American way of living, and well, that guest ran the aircon 24/7, turned on all the lights in the house, left the TV on while they slept, ran the kotatsu and god knows what else... My bills for electric went from 6800 yen, to 18600 yen.... I almost shit when I saw that. Sewage also nearly trippled.. about the only thing that went down was the gas bill because we ate out more often. Even the old tele charge went up dramatically, as the guest was calling home LOL

In the end, if you have a guest over and you are married, really consider the harmful effects of an extended visit. Even 2 weeks is lengthy, 30 days is over the limit I think.

And if you do decide to brave it and have a guest, do as Gomi says, just listen to the complaints and pretend to agree or at the minimum understand. :D It worked. At one point I thought the shit had hit the fan, but following Gomi's advice it all worked out.

Slightly Off Topic Question for Big Booger

Postby fast_dave » Tue Feb 10, 2004 3:33 pm

Hey BB,

You mention in your Feb. 10th post that your "sewage costs" nearly tripled during your session with the guest who wouldn't leave.

Question: Does Japan have a variable sewage rate according to "output" or?

I'm just wondering because I'm used to paying a flat rate both in the US and Sweden.

Thanks and I'm glad you're free again,
FD

Like most pricing in Japan, sewage rates seem to depends on the phase of the moon and the amount of fuzz on the natto the refrigerator. :P

---I pay a flat rate for sewage in Yokohama of less than 1,500yen every 3 months, but I'm "special"

fuzz on the natto

I rubbed natto on my fuzzy balls but my dog wouldn't lick it up. Now it itches. My doctor said to put kimchi on it. Any advice?

Some paint thinner and a blowtorch will clear that right up.

The cost of sewage

Postby canman » Tue Feb 10, 2004 5:59 pm

Here in Hachinohe is based upon how much water you use. For example if your water bill for the month is 18000 yen then they will charge you approx. 30%, so I guess you could say they have a floating charge. Pardon the pun.
Its funny I read this whole thread, and have had a very different experience. My parents have been here twice, once the three of us huddled together in my one room apt for 10 days. Then when I got married they were here for two weeks. Last spring my brother came and stayed for two weeks, the last three spent in Tokyo. But my wife was so happy to have some of my family over. No problems, no fights. Maybe I've just been super lucky. Or maybe we have a big enough house now. I guess space would be a big deciding factor.

Come again? 18,000 yen/m for water? Are you running a soapland. :) Dang, I don't spend that amount for electric, gas, and landline phone combined.

It is output based. My apartment tends to just double my water bill that accounts for my sewage. Normally it is like 4000 yen. It was 12000 this month. :(

Canman, I don't know. Maybe your wife really digs family time??? Mine doesn't LOL

After reading this I suggested to my wife that we stay in a hotel when we visit the outlaws in summer. The outlaws would not hear of it and insist we stay at their house. I booked a hotel just in case and will leave my reservation open until 6 p.m. local time on arrival date to make sure. They are three people and we are three people in a 5-room house for two weeks.

That's 18000 for two months. But I remember when we moved to the house I too ws shocked how high our water bill went. All the utilities have climbed. But in the new house with three toilets, everyone taking long showers and baths etc, my wife refuses to use the crappy little dishwasher I bought her, she continues to let the water run as she does the dishes. Our kitchen has one of those bathtub like sinks. I tried getting her to use a small type tub, to rinse the dishes in, but her mother told her that is bad luck. 8O
Yes BB, my wife does like family time. It makes it much easier when family come over.
