Hosting Companies that Suck Butt

Postby GuyJean » Wed Feb 11, 2004 2:04 pm

I just received this friendly reminder from my hosting company, AIT.

AIT Writes:

"As with all businesses we have to manage available resources and the customers paying for the usage of them. Your account is consuming extraordinarily large amounts of these, and we're suggesting you upgrade to an IMHIP Enterprise account. This will give you a machine of your own and you won't be affected, nor affect, customers in the shared environment.

We have systems in place that monitor usage and abuses of the servers that may shut down one or all of the services on your account if you exceed reasonable limits. Reasonable limits are defined as shared cpu, ram, disk space, or bandwidth usage that exceeds normal daily amounts by a shared account or amounts that slow or bring down a shared server."

My response:

So, is AIT unable to provide the service I'm now paying for? I'm paying for 3GB of storage and 80GB of data transfer a month. According to my statistics, if I continue to 'excessively' use this service, I will be 20GB UNDER my monthly limit.

I understand your concern, but please don't blame the customer for using a service AIT offers, but ultimately can't provide.

Thank you,

GJ

CI Host

Suck Butt Reasons:
- "Unlimited data transfer" means limited to 20GB.
- Difficult, if not impossible, to cancel account.

So if you are paying for that level of service yet are not getting it, what the hell did they email you for in the first place???

I'd be ready to transfer. keep an active copy of your site stored on your HDD, so you can just transfer the files and such to a new host in case this one decides to shut you down.

I have backups.. I've learned the hard way before.

Hosting companies have websites my the balls.. Who wants to build a superserver and become the next Ted Turner of the mini-screen?.. Of course, we still have to use somebody's cable.. Bastards! ..

The Man is obviously oppressing true entrepreneurialism.

Hmmmm. I wonder how 20GB = 80GB??? :?

I'm afraid you're gonna have to bite the bullet/tama and go the route of putting a sodai-gomi computer with some kind of _NIX installed on your veranda. Then buy the unmetered NTT 100MB hikari fibre "B FLET'S service for ?9,000yen a month.* Tokyo Electric TEPCO and IIJ offer better fibre deals but in limited areas.

*??I never understand this NTT pricing well and the NTT site does nothing to help. Also note that 100MB hikari fibre actually it usually maxes out at about 30MB/s, but at least that bandwidth is available 24/7/365.

I know we have a bitch of a time maintaining our servers, but we too have learnt that the only way for us to do business is to have our own servers in the office. We were using a co-lo service in the US but we was hacked by a very bad person..

Now waiting until the new X-serve is released to have an additonal rack to the cupboard..

I guess I should refer the guys who the horribly large website I run uses for our host.

http://www.cologuys.com

Jon, the guy who runs it is a generally nice guy who definitely won't screw you over. and if he does, tell me, and I'll kick his ass. =)
