Does Japan allow same sex marriages????

Postby Big Booger » Fri Feb 13, 2004 8:40 am

With all the news about same sex marriage, I was just wondering if Japan allows it? Or is it illegal to marry someone of the same sex in Japan?

No. All Japanese must show their birth sex in their family register.

All Shiyakusho refuse to allow any registration of marriage between same sex couples and further do not allow any change of sex after initial registration.

This last point has just recently been the subject of several court cases by transsexuals wishing to 'convert' and have it so entered on their family register.

I do not know if the actual Shinto/Christian ceremony can be performed between the same sex. Possibly so, seeing that in Japan it has no validity until entered in the family registers of the participating couple. I don't expect the 'Kekkon' companies' check anything except that the ceremony money has been paid. :D

This is totally off topic, but Big Booger, I've always wanted to ask you, who is that guy in your picture? He looks like a suupa-gaijin.

Absolutely not, in fact I have a friend (25 years old) who is planning on going to Holland soon in order to wed his 68 year old boyfriend. Where's the vomit emoticon when you need it....

I was just wondering. I mean in the US this is heating up. San Fran had their first gay marriage.. though I wonder if it will not lead to some trouble later on.

If Bush has his way gays won't be getting married in the US at least legally. Thanks Steve for clearing that up. I wonder if it will ever change in Japan?

Adhesive, here's the penis vomit emoticon:

Only to the extent that I find intolerance and ignorance offensive.

I wonder, have you been this frank with your friend concerning his upcoming marriage?

No, because although his situation grosses me out, I still support him and would never say anything to hurt his feelings. There would be no reason for me to bring it up, other than to tease or demean him, which aren't my intentions. That doesn't, however, prevent me from finding it disgusting, and joking about such on a random entertainment forum. Why, are you going to tattle on me?
