I hate to defend any Japanese company, but this is crazy. Six frames out of 30 is real OBVIOUS and not "subliminal" at all; about 1 frame of 25 is.

The program, "Manee no Tora" (Money Tiger), featured a split-second image of Yukichi Fukuzawa from Japan's 10,000-yen note as the program switched ... when recorded and viewed slowly, the screen could be seen turning white before a sepia image of Fukuzawa's face appeared on the screen. NTV officials said the image lasted 0.2 seconds, covering six frames out of 30, a length difficult for most viewers to see.

Yes there are. I worked in a graphic arts studio and we did subliminals all the time. I have no opinion on whether or not they actually WORK, but I guarantee you that subliminals are commonly requested by clients, and we had artists (including ME) who were quite skilled at putting them into ads.

James Vicary lied about his results and Wilson Brian Key made stuff up to sell books. He's written essentially the same book more than 5 times. He gave a presentation at my university and it was one of the funniest things I've ever seen. My girlfriend and I laughed our asses off at the stretches he was making to put these ridiculous amounts of detail into the images he "found" in advertisements. The "penile castration in a Chivas Regal ad" one was especially amusing.

You can make all the hidden and imaginary pictures you want. They don't do anything. Never have, never will. But, hey, if you've got clients stupid enough to pay you to make pretend pictures that nobody will notice, more power to you. Fools, their money and all that.

Vicary's farce is still quoted as the gospel by sellers:

Proof? One highly publicized study by guru Dr James Vicary, involved flashing the phrases "I want popcorn" and "Drink more coke" for just 100-milliseconds in front of a movie audience. Nobody "saw" the messages, but during that sitting popcorn sales shot up 57.8% and coke sales rocketed 18.1%. And that was just with one message.

However, according to at least one site, the concept was also investigated by the USA's CIA. One amusing result from a trial was this:

... the CIA then staged in own tests in American movie theaters. "On one occasion, the agency admonished an audience in Alexandria, Virginia, to 'buy popcorn,' but instead, many of the viewers lined up at the drinking fountains because the suggestion made them thirsty," ...
