Koreans see America as a necessary evil
As expected, about 45 percent of those in their 50s and more than half in their 60s are supporter of U.S. military presence. Nearly 48 percent of those in their 30s and more than four out of 10 students wanted them to pull out in stages.

These figures show that age plays a key factor in determining their degree of preference about U.S. military presence. The possibility is that Seoul may accelerate its devolution from the U.S., as younger generations move into the leadership of the country.

Here's a great case study for examining the effects of teaching revisionist history.

Older Koreans: We need an American presence on the peninsula.

Younger Koreans: North Koreans are our brothers! We should live together as Koreans. We don't need America here.

Yeah, I'd say it's getting close to time for me to leave.

Why can't the young Koreans' view be integrated with the older Koreans' view? You can maintain the US military presence while engaging the North, can't you? It's walking a tightrope, but I don't think the approaches are mutually exclusive.

Did somebody just say DEVOlution?Image

Korean renunification with 22 million wacko Lil' Kim cultists would create devolution in the biological sense.

See ya Korea. Let the whole region destabilize again. I don't give a rats ass. I am sure many of the soldiers there don't want to be there in the first place.. apart from the single and horny crew.

Let em protect themselves. It sure worked great back in 1950. Maybe Japan can send some SDF to Korea in case it were to get nitty gritty.

Koreans always bitch about America but I guarentee it if you put it on a direct ballot: Keep the troops or no; those little bitches would never have the nerve to send Big Poppa USA packing.

Those young Korean are living an fantasy world-literally.
They're too busy online playing the game 'lineage' in their millions to realise that the North could cause their own real-time deaths (with no 're-spawn'). :shake:

I think at this point S. Korea could handle N. Korea (maybe not, but I think the N.K soldiers would fold in a war) The Philippines kicked the troops out and never looked back. In this day of high tech warfare I don't think we really need troops in Korea or Japan.

No way in hell they could. The South may be better equipped and fed, but the North has a whole lot of bodies to toss this way. And those bodies believe in the "cause." Plus, the attitude of the soldiers in the South would cut down on their effectiveness. When I was stationed over here I had Korean soldiers I lived and worked with tell me, "I'd shoot you before I'd shoot a North Korean."

Not a comforting thing to hear your "ally" tell you.

The Philippines kicked the troops out and never looked back.

The Philippines didn't (and don't) have an enemy on their border who's got their capital within 3 minute's flying time either.

That's not the same-Abu Sayyaf is a Muslamic insurgency, not a massive army like North Korea. It's not a threat to the survival of the Phillipines state, unlike N-Korea is to S-Korea.

Man, in that situation I'd have to really resist the urge to bayonet him when he turns around... I'd be applying for a transfer to a different base post-haste!

Didn't the flip land ask for some "trainers" from the US to show their soldiers how to fight the insurgents in Mindanao? Maybe I am wrong but I kind of think I read something about that in Time magazine moons ago.

:D ANd that is after a long time without US intervention. As has been stated they don't have China as their next door neighbor :D

South Korea would be bowing to Kim's Il Dong if it weren't for US intervention. I say let the fuckers starve! All of them.

Oh, right, because it's only tragic if children starve. Never mind the adults that've starved.

Dude, give me a break! I don't want the innocent adults to starve either. You know I'm not overly sentimental about children but Goddamnit seeing footage of a five year old dying from malnutrition is especially heartbreaking. I saw it first hand in India near the Bangladeshi border. I also see tragedy in the neglect of the elderly. In America I worked and volunteered to help elderly people. I don't know where that hostile comment came from, Caustic, but it's way off base and I think you know that.

I don't want to see anyone starve.. but there comes a time when a man gets tired of being kicked in the nutts repeatedly while trying to help..

Eventually you are either gonna hit back, walk away, or get an athletic supporter!

America to retain S. Korea command

WASHINGTON - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Thursday the United States must retain wartime command of South Korea's military until that country's forces are strong enough to maintain stability on the Korean Peninsula.

Japan looks to military use of space

Tokyo.– Japan's ruling party has approved the blueprint of a law to allow military use of its space program, breaking another taboo in the officially pacifist country.

The news media and sometimes the SK government forget that the "cease fire" is an agreement for the UN forces. A state of war still exists with North Korea and could be re-activated. This needs to be addressed before South Korea takes any steps to go it on their own, no matter whether or not, they wish the US forces out Korea. This became and issue when Roh Moo-hyun was campaigning for the Presidency and initially announced that the demand for the withdrawl of all US forces would be a plank in his campaign. He was reminded of the political ramifications of this and the UN agreements by the US Ambassador and the issue was quickly dropped from his campaign.

Technically, and I will stand to be corrected on this, but it is my understanding that there is a requirement for UN forces to be present in country (in this case the US as they had borne the brunt of the logistics during the Korean "police action"and were best prepared to do so). For many years (I don't know about the present situation) but the Headquarters for the UN Command Rear for Korea, was located at the US Army base at Camp Zama, Japan.
