How about deliberately be arrested then spent the nite in the magnificent plush luxurious confines of a Japanese police cell, or for the visitor who wants to stay longer; perhaps a short spell in a Japanese prison might provide ample opportunity for zen meditation!

I used to sleep on the campus of my friends' high school a lot. There are lots of safe places to crash, but being a gaijin might draw more attention than if you were just a drunk salaryman.

hennagaijin wrote:Haha, that sounds nice. Yeah I already know about the yakusa Japanese. High School sounds nice:) But the best think would be to badger to know some crazy nihonjin or fuckedupgaijin so we can crash at their places.

It's possible to get yourself an invite to crash with an FG. Hang out here long enough and get to know the right people and you too can stay for free in Japan.

It worked for me. :D (Well, there was the matter of the "seaweed guest tax" and home network consulting, but that's as good as free.)

Once it warms up, sleeping outside is totally doable. Bring a tent, find a little corner and crash. Take it down before sunrises and you're golden. In six years of obnoxious behavoir I haven't been hassled by the fuzz a single time. You can get a sento (public bath) in the morning, often for under 500 yen. It'll save you tons as even capsules are 4000 yen a night. The way I see it, bring your walkman, buy a six pack of tallboys, enjoy the night and some tunes, maybe chat up some crazies, doze off drunk, head for the sento at sun-up. Nap in the afternnon sun. No worries.

Scrap wood exterior, blue tarp ceiling and even a frickin' glass window! Not sure where you can get these materials, but building a shack in the park would be an interesting undertaking once you arrived here. :D Of course, another, less labor-intensive option would be to find yourself a nice, refrigerator-sized cardboard box and setting up digs in Shinjuku station.

Taro showed me one of the "homeless villages" when I was in town. I think it was in Shibuya (not sure if we'd wandered into a different area though). some of them even had power and TV aerials in their huts. Makes you wonder if they've got their own neighborhood watch program or something so they don't get what little stuff they've got stolen.

Yep. Even when homeless, the Japanese strive for innovation and perfection.

For starters, I doubt the girls there find poverty to be a real turn-on.

Or......they might take pity on your poverty and offer you a hot meal, a shower, and a comfortable bed for the night.

OK, that's a long shot...actually, you won't even be able to get onto the campus. Tokyo college campuses are generally gated and locked at night.
