Keitai-cam 'shoplifting'?

Postby Taro Toporific » Mon Jun 30, 2003 3:19 pm

Hey, I've already done the to snag for the weekly magazine pictures for the FG Forum. 8)

Japan grapples with digital shoplifting using mobiles
Agence France-Presse
Tokyo, June 30

Japanese publishers said on Monday that they will launch a campaign this week to stop digital shoplifters -- people who visit book stores to photograph magazine pages with their cellphones rather than make a purchase.

Yeah you're right... I assume that it's the new keitai megapix cams they're worried about for the FUTURE.
Certainly a Sony CLie 90 series with EdgeH card can do a nice job. I've been going into the bookstore now to take pix with my 4M-pixel camera whenever Marvin starts raving about some weekly magazine perv pix.

I don't know about you, but my time is worth more than snapping shots from a friggin' book instead of buying it.

People just spend all day in the conbini reading them anyway!! Try doing that in any other country and you would be hounded out by the staff with a gruff, "You buying that?"

Nah, Gomi. Here in the States they now demand you buy nasty franken-coffee or something covered in sugar to consume while you read. Oh, and its horribly over-priced coffee/pastry too.

I went back to the states and was reading PC Magazine in Walmart and sure enough, they hounded me LOL

But I am with CS on this one, my time is more valuable than this.. 300-1000 yen... How many minutes does it take you to shoot a whole magazine with a camera? And the quality? What's next? Bringing in a portable scanner and making PDF docs out of it?

Yep it sure does sound odd except ...the rest-of-the-story is the keitai-cam is used to take photos of fashion photographs.

Japanese want to stamp out 'digital shoplifting'
Amazing what you can do with a camera-phone
Tue 1 July 2003 11:03AM BST / CNET Asia
http://www.silicon.com/news/500018/1/4931.html

Japanese bookstores are sick and tired of female browsers who snap pictures of magazines with their camera-phones and want to put a stop to it. ...t the picture-takers tend to be young women looking at fashion magazines - they snap images of the latest hair and clothes styles to send to friends, then put the publication back on the shelf.

When are they going to make those things turn off via bluetooth? That'd solve the problem pretty quickly...

That could be abused.

You wanna trap a Jchick, turn off her cell phone and THEN rush her. She tries to call for help but cant.

It would take just ONE muckety mucks daughter for this to happen to and organic waste would hit the spinning air mover.
I will not abide ignorant intolerance just for the sake of getting along.

Ahhhhh, the time-honored Japanese tradition of tachiyomi.

Yikes, I just heard the technical term for this: digimanbiki (digital shoplifting)... Gee, that sounds cold. 8O

Camera phone theft not immoral - survey
Cellular-News.com / 16-Sep-03
Young users of camera phones in Japan do not consider photographing information in newspapers they haven't paid for to be a crime, according to a new survey by Nepro Japan. There has been a rising trend in Japan for camera phone owners to use them to take photos of news articles and information that interests them, then read it later on their PC's....

The survey also found that 60% of the respondents said they think "digital shoplifting" is immoral. A total of 26% responded that they think it is a crime and 14% said it is permissible....

I do this when i need a map or info on somewhere. Especially from those Walker magazines and stuff. Really useful. However, one of the big bookstores near me put up this big sign at the enterance "please do not take pictures or memos with your keitai while in the store". Kinda sad actually it had to come to that.

I went to NightWalker, one of the TokyoWalker weekly event guide magazines and all I got was....

Tokyo NightWalker
If it is a Japanese girl's picture, it is a rule at Tokyo NightWalker!
It is many and an excessive picture can be enjoyed.
